In Siem Reap, nearly 100 participants gathered at the Angkor heritage area on May 10 for the 9th Forest Walk organized by the Junior Chamber International Siem Reap chapter. The wellness focused event invited people to step away from busy routines and reconnect with nature through guided walks, meditation, yoga, and mindful exploration around some of Cambodia’s most iconic temple sites. Set among the forests and ancient ruins of Angkor, the activity highlighted the growing importance of mental well being, environmental awareness, and cultural appreciation in modern daily life.

The Forest Walk began early in the morning and lasted about five hours, taking participants through peaceful forest trails linking Preah Khan Temple, the riverside swing bridge, and Ta Nei Temple. The program combined outdoor activities with wellness practices designed to help participants reduce stress, improve mindfulness, and strengthen their connection with both nature and Khmer heritage.

What Is Angkor Forest Walkers?

Angkor Forest Walkers is a wellness and nature based initiative created to encourage people to reconnect with the natural environment while promoting mental and physical health. Organized by JCI Siem Reap, the project combines guided forest walks with activities such as yoga, meditation, silent walking, and environmental awareness sessions inside the Angkor heritage area.

The initiative aims to create a healthier lifestyle for participants by encouraging them to slow down, disconnect from stress, and experience nature in a more meaningful way. Through mindful walking and wellness activities, participants are encouraged to reflect, relax, and appreciate Cambodia’s cultural and environmental treasures.

Wellness Through Nature and Meditation

Janne Spaan, national vice president of JCI Cambodia, explained that the Forest Walk project was created to support mental and physical well being, especially for people dealing with demanding responsibilities and stressful lifestyles.

“As leaders, we often live very stressful lives. We are responsible for many tasks, our teams and our organizations. It is important to understand how we can take care of our overall well-being,” she said.

“Our Forest Walk project focuses on helping leaders lower their stress levels and giving them the tools they need to take care of themselves.

“We are fortunate to have Angkor Wat as our national heritage. It is a beautiful place for Khmer people to reconnect with their culture and heritage.”

The event also included meditation and yoga sessions led by experienced wellness guides. Participants spent time practicing mindful breathing, silent walking, and quiet reflection while surrounded by the peaceful forest landscape.

Participants Say the Experience Reduced Stress

For many participants, the event provided a rare opportunity to disconnect from work pressures and focus on personal well being. Phear Thab, a 36 year old NGO staff member from Siem Reap who joined the activity for the first time, described the experience as refreshing and energizing.

“I feel more energized and connected with nature, especially through resting and exploring a new experience,” Thab said.

“For me, starting with the meditation and yoga sessions helped me feel completely relaxed. It was a chance to spend time away from work and daily pressures, without thinking about anything else, and simply connect with nature.”

Participants were also encouraged to appreciate the environmental value of the Angkor forest while learning more about conservation and sustainable tourism.

Meditation Expert Highlights Importance of Mindfulness

Meditation expert Lokta Joel, who guided part of the program, explained that mindfulness and meditation are essential for maintaining emotional balance in daily life. He compared meditation to cleaning the mind in the same way people care for their physical health.

“When we spend time in nature through activities like forest walks or forest bathing, walking quietly or barefoot, it helps us connect with nature and with ourselves,” he said.

According to organizers, activities such as forest bathing and mindful walking can help lower stress, improve focus, and create a stronger sense of inner calm.

Angkor Heritage Becomes a Space for Wellness

Beyond tourism and historical exploration, the Angkor heritage area is increasingly becoming a place where people seek healing, mindfulness, and personal reflection. Organizers believe combining Cambodia’s cultural landmarks with wellness activities offers a meaningful way for people to reconnect with themselves while appreciating the country’s rich heritage.

The growing popularity of events like Angkor Forest Walkers also reflects increasing awareness about mental health and balanced living, particularly among young professionals and community leaders in Cambodia.
