Cambodia Launches Digital Driver’s Licences: How Will Cambodia’s Digital Driver’s Licences Work?

Cambodia has officially entered a new phase of digital public services with the launch of the country’s first ever digital driver’s licences through the Verify.gov.kh platform. The new initiative was unveiled during an official ceremony in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, led by Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth and Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea. The move is expected to modernise transport related services, improve convenience for citizens, and strengthen Cambodia’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Cambodia launches digital driver's licenses

More than 400 government officials, technology experts, and representatives from relevant institutions attended the launch event, highlighting the growing importance of digital governance in Cambodia. Authorities said the new system will allow users to verify driver’s licence information securely online while reducing fraud and improving efficiency in public service delivery. More information about the platform can be found through Verify.gov.kh.

Digital Transformation Reaches Public Transport Services

Speaking during the ceremony, Peng Ponea praised the ministries and technical teams involved in developing the digital verification platform. He noted that Verify.gov.kh has already received international recognition and awards, reflecting Cambodia’s progress in building modern digital governance systems.

According to Ponea, digital technology now plays a critical role in improving administrative services across the country, especially within the transport sector. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has already introduced several digital services covering driver’s licences, motorcycle licences, vehicle identification cards, inspection certificates, and other transport related documents.

Officials believe the introduction of digital driver’s licences represents a major step toward implementing Cambodia’s Digital Government Policy 2022 to 2035, which focuses on improving public service delivery, strengthening transparency, and reducing opportunities for corruption.

Faster Verification and Reduced Fraud Risks

Chea Vandeth explained that the digital verification service officially became operational on Wednesday through the Verify.gov.kh platform. The system is designed to help authorities and users quickly confirm the authenticity of driver’s licence information while helping prevent document forgery.

The minister confirmed that all driver’s licences issued before May 13 this year remain legally valid, regardless of whether they contain QR codes. However, licences equipped with QR codes can now be scanned directly through the platform for official verification.

Authorities say the new system will simplify document checks and provide greater convenience for citizens, businesses, and government institutions that rely on identity verification during administrative procedures.

Digital Licences Coming to Mobile Devices

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications also revealed plans to integrate digital driver’s licences into the DG SuperApp, a government developed mobile application aimed at expanding digital public services in Cambodia.

Through the app, users will eventually be able to scan their physical licences and securely store verified digital versions on their smartphones. Officials say this feature will make document access easier while reducing the need to carry physical cards in daily life.

The government views the project as part of a wider strategy to create a smarter and more connected digital society in Cambodia.

Cambodia’s Digital Platform Gains Regional Attention

Chea Sereyvuth, Secretary General of the Digital Government Committee, said Verify.gov.kh has already become an important digital system for Cambodia and is attracting attention from neighboring countries in the region.

He explained that the digital driver’s licence service was specifically designed to simplify and speed up the application process. According to officials, identity verification measures are strictly enforced to ensure only the actual applicant can complete the registration process.

Sereyvuth added that the application process can take as little as three minutes, making the service far more convenient compared to traditional procedures.

Conclusion

The launch of Cambodia’s first digital driver’s licences marks another important milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. By combining faster verification systems, stronger security measures, and mobile accessibility, the government hopes to improve public services while building greater trust in digital governance. As Cambodia continues modernising its administrative systems, initiatives like Verify.gov.kh could play a major role in shaping the future of digital public services across the country.
