Cambodia Eyes Easier Visa Rules: Here Are the Key Insights!

Cambodia is being encouraged to modernize its visa policies as regional competition for tourists, investors, and remote workers continues to grow across Southeast Asia. The European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, widely known as EuroCham, recently called on the government to introduce more flexible visa regulations, including visa free entry for more nationalities and a special long stay visa designed for digital nomads and remote professionals. The recommendations were outlined in EuroCham’s White Book 2027 and come shortly after Cambodia introduced a pilot visa free entry scheme for Chinese visitors from June 15 to October 15, 2026.

Cambodia Eyes Easier Visa Rules

Business leaders believe the Kingdom has a strong opportunity to position itself as a more open and attractive destination for international talent and entrepreneurs. With affordable living costs, rich culture, and a growing business environment, Cambodia could become increasingly appealing to remote workers looking for long term stays in Asia.

More details about EuroCham Cambodia can be found on the official EuroCham Cambodia website.

Digital Nomads Become a Growing Opportunity

EuroCham highlighted the rapid rise of digital nomads across Southeast Asia as remote work becomes more common globally. Countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand have already introduced special visa programs that allow foreign professionals employed by overseas companies to live and work remotely for extended periods.

According to the proposal, Cambodia currently lacks a dedicated visa framework for this growing group of international professionals. Analysts say this could limit the country’s competitiveness as neighboring nations aggressively attract remote workers who contribute significantly to local economies through long term spending.

EuroCham believes Cambodia could benefit greatly from introducing a digital nomad visa program. Remote professionals often spend heavily on apartments, hotels, restaurants, co working spaces, transportation, entertainment, and education services for their families. These long stay visitors can help support local businesses beyond the traditional tourism sector.

Calls for More Flexible Visa Policies

The recommendations also urged Cambodia to expand visa free access for both business travelers and tourists from more countries. EuroCham proposed more flexible entry options that would allow visitors to stay for 15, 30, or even 45 days without facing complicated visa procedures.

Under the current system, most non ASEAN travelers are still required to pay visa fees regardless of whether they visit Cambodia for only a few days or several weeks. EuroCham argued that the existing structure appears outdated when compared to more traveler friendly systems introduced by neighboring countries.

Supporters of visa reform say easier travel policies could help strengthen Cambodia’s reputation as a business friendly destination for international conferences, investment activities, and trade events. A more open approach may also encourage repeat visitors and long term international engagement.

Economic Benefits Could Outweigh Visa Fee Losses

While some concerns remain over reduced government income from visa fees, EuroCham argued that the broader economic benefits would likely outweigh the losses. Increased visitor spending could generate stronger VAT collections and stimulate growth across tourism, hospitality, retail, and service industries.

“These long-term visitors contribute directly to local economic development through sustained consumption and investment in local services,” the proposal stated.

Analysts note that regional competition for high spending tourists and remote professionals has intensified since the pandemic slowed global tourism. Countries across Southeast Asia are increasingly introducing long stay residency programs to attract international talent and boost domestic spending.

The White Book also warned that restrictive visa systems can directly affect hotels, restaurants, retailers, and fast moving consumer goods businesses by reducing international arrivals and weakening consumer demand.

Government Technology Supports Visitor Monitoring

To address security and border management concerns, the proposal pointed to Cambodia’s newly introduced e Arrival card system. The digital platform allows authorities to better monitor incoming visitors while maintaining immigration oversight and improving efficiency at border checkpoints.

EuroCham Executive Director Martin Brisson believes Cambodia has strong potential to become a regional hub for international professionals if the country adapts to global travel trends.

“By modernising and adapting its visa policies, Cambodia has a real opportunity to attract this growing community and further strengthen its appeal as a dynamic and open destination for international talent and entrepreneurship,” he said.

If implemented, the proposed reforms could significantly reshape Cambodia’s tourism and investment landscape while helping the country compete more effectively with regional neighbors seeking global talent and long stay visitors.

Conclusion

As Southeast Asia competes to attract international travelers and remote professionals, Cambodia faces growing pressure to modernize its visa policies. Easier entry rules and a dedicated digital nomad visa could open new economic opportunities, increase international spending, and strengthen the Kingdom’s reputation as a welcoming destination for global talent. With regional competition intensifying, the coming years could become an important turning point for Cambodia’s tourism and business future.
