Nighttime Temple Tourism Begins, What Will Visitors Experience?

Cambodia Launches New Initiative to Revitalize Tourism

Cambodia has taken another step to strengthen its tourism industry by establishing a new inter ministerial task force dedicated to promoting film tourism and expanding nighttime temple visits. The decision, issued on June 16, reflects the government’s broader strategy to diversify tourism experiences, attract more international visitors, and encourage travelers to stay longer in the country. The initiative comes at a time when the tourism sector continues to recover from global economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges that have affected international travel.

Nighttime Temple Tourism in Cambodia

The newly formed task force is expected to bring together several government institutions to develop long term strategies, oversee implementation, and coordinate with both public and private sector partners. By combining cultural heritage, entertainment, and creative industries, Cambodia hopes to strengthen its international tourism appeal while showcasing its rich history and iconic destinations in new and engaging ways.

Multi Ministry Team to Lead Tourism Development

The task force is chaired by Minister of Tourism Hout Hak and includes six vice chairpersons representing the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Office of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Tourism, along with other relevant institutions.

According to Article 2 of the June 16 decision, the committee is responsible for preparing strategic plans and action plans that support both film tourism and nighttime temple visits. Its role also includes monitoring the implementation of these plans to ensure they deliver meaningful results for Cambodia’s tourism industry.

Supporting Film Production and Nighttime Experiences

One of the task force’s primary responsibilities is to coordinate with government agencies, private companies, and other stakeholders involved in producing tourism films, tourism themed music videos, commercial advertisements, and nighttime temple tourism programs.

The initiative is designed to promote Cambodia on the global stage by highlighting its cultural heritage and unique attractions through creative media. Officials believe that international film productions and promotional campaigns can significantly enhance the country’s image while encouraging more travelers to visit Cambodia.

The task force will also identify suitable filming locations, study incentive mechanisms that encourage film production, develop strategies to attract international filmmakers, music video producers, and commercial advertisers, and oversee the expansion of nighttime tourism activities at temple sites.

Expanding Tourism Beyond Daytime Attractions

The government hopes the new strategy will create more reasons for visitors to spend additional days in Cambodia. Nighttime temple visits are expected to offer travelers a fresh cultural experience while creating opportunities for evening events that celebrate Cambodia’s artistic, religious, and cultural traditions.

By extending tourism activities beyond normal daytime hours, the initiative may also generate additional economic opportunities for local businesses, tour operators, hotels, restaurants, and surrounding communities that depend heavily on tourism.

Regular progress reports on the implementation of these initiatives will be submitted to the Prime Minister through the Office of the Council of Ministers to ensure continued oversight and evaluation.

Tourism Industry Faces Ongoing Challenges

The establishment of the task force comes as Cambodia’s tourism sector continues to navigate a difficult global environment marked by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia welcomed approximately 1.54 million international visitors during the first five months of 2026. This represents a 47.8 percent decline compared with the 2.95 million visitors recorded during the same period in 2025, highlighting the need for innovative strategies that can stimulate tourism demand.

Industry Expert Calls for Broader Tourism Improvements

Thourn Sinan, president of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter, welcomed the introduction of new tourism products but emphasized that additional improvements are equally important.

He said authorities should strengthen law enforcement and public safety while continuing to diversify tourism offerings, particularly in Siem Reap. Beyond the famous Angkor temple complex, he noted that visitors should also be encouraged to explore destinations such as Phnom Kulen National Park and traditional Cambodian villages.

He also stressed the importance of expanding Cambodia’s international tourism promotion efforts to reach more global travelers.

“Introducing nighttime temple tours offers visitors an attractive new option,” he noted.

The new tourism initiative also coincides with Cambodia’s four month trial of a visa free policy for Chinese tourists, a move expected to help attract additional visitors from one of Asia’s largest outbound travel markets.

Conclusion

The creation of Cambodia’s new inter ministerial task force signals the government’s commitment to modernizing and diversifying its tourism industry. By promoting film tourism, expanding nighttime temple experiences, and strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors, Cambodia aims to attract more international visitors while creating richer travel experiences. Although challenges remain, combining innovative tourism products with stronger promotion, improved security, and expanded destination offerings could help position Cambodia as an even more competitive destination in the global tourism market.
