Bek Anlung Durian Gains National Recognition

Cambodia has taken another important step to protect one of its most famous agricultural products after the Ministry of Commerce officially registered Bek Anlung Durian as a Collective Mark. The decision, announced on June 25, 2026, strengthens intellectual property protection while promoting the identity of Cambodian products at home and abroad. The registration also reflects the Royal Government’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development, increasing the value of local products, and expanding Cambodia’s presence in international markets.

Bek Anlung Durian Gains National Recognition

The recognition comes after years of concern over counterfeit durians being sold under the Bek Anlung name. By introducing legal trademark protection alongside a QR code traceability system and Cambodia Good Agricultural Practices certification, authorities aim to preserve the reputation of the fruit, improve consumer confidence, and create better economic opportunities for growers and traders in Kampong Cham province.

A Stronger Shield Against Counterfeit Products

Bek Anlung durian has long been celebrated for its distinctive flavor and premium quality. However, local farmers have faced unfair competition as imported durians were frequently marketed using the Bek Anlung name, damaging both consumer trust and the value of the genuine product.

To address the problem, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries officially registered the Collective Mark on June 13 while also awarding Cambodia Good Agricultural Practices, commonly known as CamGAP, certification to the Bek Anlung durian community in Stung Trang district. Together with a QR code verification system, the initiative allows consumers to confirm the fruit’s origin before making a purchase while making it much harder for counterfeit products to enter the market.

Collective Mark Raises Value and Protects Farmers

According to the Ministry of Commerce, the registration officially recognizes Bek Anlung Durian as a protected community brand. Officials described the achievement as a significant milestone in strengthening intellectual property protection, increasing product value, and enhancing the reputation of Cambodian agricultural products in both domestic and international markets.

“The registration of this Collective Mark will contribute to enhancing market competitiveness, increasing consumer confidence, and supporting the livelihoods of the community of durian producers and traders in Kampong Cham province,” stated the ministry in its announcement.

The ministry added that the initiative is fully aligned with the Cambodian Government’s policy to promote sustainable agricultural development, increase the added value of domestic products, and strengthen the presence of Cambodian products in international markets.

QR Code System Builds Consumer Confidence

The new QR code traceability system provides buyers with a simple way to verify whether the durian they purchase is genuine Bek Anlung produce. Consumers can scan the code to confirm the fruit’s origin and ensure it was cultivated according to nationally recognized agricultural standards.

Kampong Cham Governor Un Chan Da described the recognition as a major achievement for local growers. He said the new system will help eliminate fraudulent labeling while ensuring consumers receive safe and high quality products.

“The achievement highlights how the community’s durian is cultivated in accordance with technical standards, ensuring high safety standards for consumers and preventing any fake labeling in the market,” Chan Da wrote on his official Facebook page.

He also encouraged the community to strengthen internal management, expand membership, maintain strict quality control, and continue building public confidence. Consumers were also advised to verify the Collective Mark and scan the QR code before purchasing Bek Anlung durians.

Community Farmers Ready for Greater Opportunities

The Bek Anlung Durian Producers and Traders Community currently consists of 162 members cultivating approximately 706 hectares of durian orchards. Together, they supply around 4,000 tonnes of durian to the market each year, making the community one of Cambodia’s most important durian producing regions.

The community was formally established through an agricultural cooperative in Stung Trang district, creating a stronger platform for growers to work together on quality control, marketing, and trademark protection. The legal recognition of the Collective Mark further strengthens their ability to protect the Bek Anlung name from misuse while supporting future market expansion.

Intellectual Property Supports Long Term Growth

Suon Vichea, Chairman of the Secretariat of the National Commission for Intellectual Property Management and Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, said the community now has greater capacity to jointly oversee cultivation practices, improve fruit quality, explore new markets, and defend the Collective Mark against violations.

“The importance of collective brands that help communities protect against intellectual property infringement by third parties, promote agriculture and tourism, and add value to the Bek Anloung durian in the domestic market, and enable its export to foreign markets in the future,” Vichea said.

The Collective Mark not only safeguards the Bek Anlung name but also positions Cambodian agricultural products to compete more effectively in international markets while creating long term economic benefits for local farming communities.

Conclusion

The official registration of Bek Anlung Durian as a Collective Mark marks a major milestone for Cambodia’s agricultural sector. By combining legal trademark protection, CamGAP certification, and QR code traceability, the initiative helps protect consumers, preserve the reputation of one of the country’s finest fruits, and strengthen the livelihoods of local farmers. As Cambodia continues to promote high quality agricultural products with stronger intellectual property protection, Bek Anlung Durian is well positioned to become an even stronger symbol of Cambodian excellence in regional and global markets.
