Tourism of Koh Kong
Koh Kong may be the most southwestern province of Cambodia. It is one of the biggest provinces in the whole country with a long undeveloped coastline and a mountainous, forested and largely inaccessible interior, which embraces section of the Cardamom Mountains, the biggest coherent rainforest of Southeast Asia. It is known for its rich landscape including both mountains and beaches.
It is a popular destination among travellers who come here to enjoy beach activities, national parks and the stunning views of the Cambodian countryside.
National Parks
The Kirirom National Park – The Kirirom National Park is located in Kampong Speu in southwest Cambodia in the Cardamom mountain range. The park offers excellent cold weather as it is situated above 700 meters from the sea level. It is surrounded by cliffs, pine trees, wooded hills, Buddhist shrines and splendid views of Cardamom mountains. It is a popular day-trip destination for tourists visiting Phnom Penh and also Koh Rong, who enjoy the waterfalls, lakes and many species of birds that reside in the park.
Botum Sakor National Park – It is the largest national park in Cambodia that can be visited from Koh Kong and Sihanoukville provinces.
Beaches and Islands
The Lazy Beach is a private beach located on the western side of the island of Koh Rong Samloem near the coast of Sihanoukville city, in Cambodia. Secluded from additional islands and the mainland, it is a clean stretch of white sand beach popular among tourists looking for beach day trips from Koh Kong. Travelers can enjoy many activities from swimming to snorkelling to boat trips in the Lazy Beach.
Long Collection is a beach located close to Koh Toch in Cambodia. It is known for the many luxurious resorts along the coast, where tourists spend their beach vacations. It is also called as 4k beach by the locals but actually stretches for about 3km consisting of white sand and palm trees. It’s named after the farmer who grows cashew, mango, and coconut trees behind the beach on land bisected by a river and surrounded by lush jungle.
Koh Tang, also called Tang Island, is usually a group of islands off the coast of Sihanoukville, which are visited by travelers exploring Koh Kong as well. There are no civilians on this island maintained by the Cambodian military, and people come to enjoy day-trips.
What is the best time to visit Koh Kong?
The best time to visit Koh Kong is from October to February when the weather isn’t hot and the humidity is manageable. It’s a great time for exploring beaches and enjoy watersports as the currents are better.
Tips When Arriving Koh Kong
Carry essential medicines, umbrella, sunscreen, flip-flops and anything you might need before reaching Koh Kong as there are not many shops. There are not many options for drinks and food or basic things on many beaches. It is better to carry some water and snacks. Also, there are no public toilets on some beaches. There are just a couple of ATMs in the town and cash is required for all transactions. It is suggested to carry enough money.
Book accommodations in advance as there are limited options and they get booked quickly during the peak season.
Koh Kong is an excellent province to spend time relaxing on the beaches, enjoying watersports and soaking in the scenic views of tropical jungles.
Apart from water activities and beaches, there aren’t many things to do. So if you don’t enjoy beaches, Koh Kong may not be for you personally.
