The 5 most popular online scams to be aware of in Cambodia

Cambodia, Southeast Asia. The country with the most vulnerable population to internet scams in the world. This is due to the limited educational level of Cambodia’s population. Cambodia has a median literacy rate of 87%. However, this statistic does not paint the entire picture. 47% of Cambodians are at or below grade 3 level education, meaning they are unable to read or write beyond simple words. As a result, Cambodia has a high percentage of illiterate adults willing to fall victim to scammers.

The 5 most popular online scams to be aware of in Cambodia

Cambodians are constantly bombarded by cyber scams, be it through email or social media. These scams can take many forms, ranging from the seemingly benign like phishing for personal information to the more intrusive form of identity theft.

The following are 5 common scams that Cambodians should be aware of:

1. Emails Phishing scam

A fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details for misappropriation.

2. Fake antivirus software scam in Cambodia

There are many popular online scams in Cambodia, and one of the most common is the fake antivirus software scam. This scam asks for money to install and update antivirus software programs on your computer, but there is no program installed. They may also ask you to provide personal details so they can help you find out who hacked your computer.

3. Make money easy and fast scam in Cambodia

The internet is a wonderful resource for information, communication, and many other useful things. However, it is also the perfect place for scammers to lurk. Cambodia has seen an increase in online scams including ones that seem like great opportunities but are really just traps to get your money or personal information. In Cambodia, there are a number of scams online that you should be aware of, from the time-tested Nigerian money scam to newfangled fake Amazon reviews.

The most common online scam in Cambodia is the Nigerian money scam, which usually starts with a Facebook friend request from someone who is out of country and needs help getting their inheritance out of the country after their father died in an accident. A newer scam that has emerged in Cambodia is the fake Amazon review scam.

4. Fake shopping websites and formjacking scam in Cambodia

Millions of people are victims of online scams each year, with many of these scams originating in countries where English isn’t the native language. Cambodia is one such country, in which the most common scams have over time become well-known to locals and expats alike, but still continue to spread quickly in this country. One scam that is particularly prevalent in Cambodia is formjacking, which uses fake shopping websites to steal personal information from unsuspecting shoppers.

6. Fake employment offers scam in Cambodia

In Cambodia most scams are carried out over the internet and by phone. These scams can take many forms, from fake employment offers to emails from a Nigerian prince with a large inheritance. The rise of the internet has meant the global market has grown exponentially and has created a new opportunity for criminals to exploit their victims. With so many new platforms and countless techniques at their disposal, it is important to be aware of the most popular scams in Cambodia.

Many people in Cambodia fall for these scams because they are looking to make money or improve their lives. The problem is that it’s only going to get worse as more people have access to the internet and connected devices.

Cambodian culture is one of the most relaxing, gentle and welcoming cultures in the world. No matter what your age, gender, race or religion, Cambodia will make you feel welcome.  Cambodia is a country rich in culture and beauty, but the definition of these two concepts is different for each person. For some, it may be a matter of what is on the outside: makeup and clothes. For others, it may be about what is on the inside: thoughts and feelings. The one thing that all Cambodians can agree on however, is that “beauty never dies”.

What is a beauty standard?

Over the years, beauty standards have evolved and changed. These changes are due to both external factors, such as society’s norms, but also internal factors. Social media has changed beauty standards in many ways. There are certain features that are popular on Instagram- thin eyebrows, fuller lips, no wrinkles or acne, no hair on your face or scalp- these things make for a perfect selfie. Beauty in Cambodia is defined by the cultural norms in the country.

What is a standard of beauty in Cambodia?

In Cambodia, Cambodian people value things in defining beauty.

Skin color

Many people value white skin color because they believe that it has a beauty that other skin colors do not. Some people believe that white skin is considered to be more attractive, and in many countries such as Japan, Korea, and India, lighter skin is preferred and most popular. Another factor in why some people value white skin is because of the privilege and social status that come with it; in some cultures, people with darker skin are discriminated against and viewed as lower class.

How Tall You are

Women have an inexplicable preference for tall men. It could be that they are trying to find a taller mate in order to have children who will have advantages in the workplace. This choice may also stem from women feeling more secure when they are close to someone much taller than them. The height of a man’s father has been shown to correlate with his life chances, so perhaps the woman is looking for someone who might be better off in life to help provide for her child.

In the past, Cambodia has suffered from a lack of infrastructure, but in recent years the country has made significant progress in the development of roads, communications, power, and other public utilities. The government has also sought to improve water and sanitation services, and to protect the environment. Tourism in Cambodia is the fastest growing industry. This is due in part to Cambodia’s vast natural beauty and its proximity to other Southeast Asian countries with developed economies. The government has encouraged growth of this industry by providing tax incentives for investors, but has placed restrictions on foreign ownership of hotel properties to prevent disruption of the country’s culture. Sihanoukville province is a popular tourist destination, receiving more than 1 million tourists annually. Siem Reap is Cambodia’s second largest city and a popular destination for tourists. Phnom Penh, the capital, is Cambodia’s largest city with a population of 1.4 million people.

1. Phnom Penh

In the last decade Phnom Penh has been the fastest growing city in Asia. In 2017, Phnom Penh’s GDP grew by 8.6% and this increase is expected to be repeated again in 2018. There are a number of factors that have contributed to this growth, but it can be largely attributed to a major reconstruction project that has been going on for years.

Next to the Tonle Sap River, Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s largest city and its historic capital. Phnom Penh has beautiful colonial architecture, vast green parks, bustling markets, and a rich culture. The city may be one of the most visually appealing cities in Southeast Asia. The capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is one of the most visited cities in the country. The population of Phnom Penh is 1.7 million people, and the majority are Buddhist. The current development trend in Phnom Penh is shown as in below picture.

2. Siem Reap province

Siem Reap province is located in the northern part of Cambodia and the capital is Siem Reap. The province’s main industry is tourism as many people come to see temples such as Angkor Wat. Tourism has a big impact on the economy of this province as it creates jobs for locals and brings in money from international tourists. This providence also has a large population, with more than 2.8 million people living there. The current development trend in Siem Reap is shown as in below picture.

3. Sihanoukville privince

The province is bordered by Vietnam to the East, as well as the Gulf of Thailand to the South. In 2011, it boasted a population of 918,000. Though not as populous as other provinces, Sihanoukville boasts the most diverse environment in all of Cambodia. There are regions devoted to agriculture and fishing, while other parts are covered with forests and mangroves. The current development trend in Sihanoukville is shown as in below picture.
