Cambodia Sets Clear Investment and Donation Pathways to Citizenship

Cambodia has formally defined how foreign nationals can qualify for citizenship through naturalisation by introducing firm financial thresholds tied to investment and public contribution. Under a sub decree signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet in late 2025, foreigners may apply for Cambodian citizenship if they invest at least one million US dollars in approved priority sectors or make a personal cash donation of three million US dollars to the national budget in support of socio economic development or humanitarian causes. The policy is designed to attract serious long term investors while ensuring that all funds involved are transparent, lawful, and aligned with national development goals.

Invest in Cambodia

Investment Based Citizenship Focuses on Priority Sectors

The sub decree outlines that foreign nationals holding a valid investment permit from a competent authority may apply for citizenship under Article 21 of the Law on Nationality, provided their projects meet Cambodia’s priority investment policies. As stated in Article 29, “Applicants must invest at least 4 billion riel ($1 million) in personal capital to implement an actual investment project in Cambodia.” These projects must fall within officially listed priority sectors and comply with approved investment plans, tax obligations, and other regulatory requirements. The aim is to ensure that investments are genuine, productive, and beneficial to the Cambodian economy rather than purely symbolic contributions.

Strict Review Process Ensures Transparency and Legality

To safeguard the integrity of the process, Article 30 assigns the Ministry of Interior the responsibility to review and evaluate all investment capital, project types, and compliance conditions related to citizenship applications. The ministry may consult other relevant institutions before reaching a final decision. The regulation clearly states that “Personal investment capital must be clear and legal,” reinforcing the government’s emphasis on transparency, accountability, and lawful sources of funds throughout the application process.

Donation Option Provides Alternative Route to Naturalisation

In addition to investment, the sub decree offers a donation based pathway under Article 22 of the Law on Nationality. Article 31 specifies that “foreign nationals who make a personal cash donation of at least 12 billion riel ($3 million) to the national budget for socio economic development or the humanitarian sector” may apply for Cambodian citizenship by naturalisation. These donations must come from a clear and legal source and be transferred directly into the national budget through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, ensuring full oversight and public accountability.

Priority Industries Aligned With National Development Goals

The government has clearly identified sectors eligible for citizenship linked investments, reflecting Cambodia’s long term economic strategy. These include agriculture and agro industry, food and agricultural processing for domestic and export markets, manufacturing that supports local consumption and import substitution, waste processing, tourism, and related services. The list also extends to digital and high tech industries, innovation and research and development, SMEs in priority sectors, industrial and science parks, high value new industries, regional and global supply chain activities, SME financing through banks and financial institutions, and affordable housing in government priority areas.

Recent Citizenship Revocation Highlights Enforcement

The tightening of citizenship rules comes amid heightened scrutiny of how Cambodian nationality has been granted in the past. In December 2025, Prince Group founder Chen Zhi was stripped of his Cambodian citizenship ahead of his arrest and deportation on January 6, 2026. Speaking to Reuters, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn said an investigation found that Zhi had obtained citizenship illegally, though specific details were not disclosed. The case underscores the government’s renewed commitment to enforcing nationality laws and ensuring that citizenship is granted only through lawful and transparent means.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s new investment and donation thresholds mark a decisive shift toward a more structured and accountable citizenship by naturalisation framework. By clearly defining financial requirements, prioritising strategic sectors, and enforcing rigorous legal reviews, the government aims to attract responsible foreign investors while protecting the integrity of Cambodian nationality. As recent enforcement actions demonstrate, citizenship is no longer merely a transactional benefit but a privilege tied closely to genuine contribution, legality, and alignment with national development objectives.

Night Buses Become a Time Saving Choice for Cambodian Travellers

As Cambodia’s road network continues to improve, travelling long distances has become faster and more affordable, encouraging more people to choose night buses as a practical way to move between provinces. For many Cambodians, overnight travel offers a way to avoid daytime traffic while arriving early and rested. Business owners, civil servants and tourists alike are increasingly opting for sleeper buses that allow them to maximise productivity without losing a full day on the road, even as public debate continues around safety standards and driver fatigue.

Busy Lifestyles Drive Demand for Overnight Travel

For passengers with demanding schedules, night buses fit naturally into daily routines. Phoeng Phannary, a 42 year old fruit vendor from Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kork district, travels to the provinces twice a month to manage her customers. She said overnight trips save valuable daytime hours and allow her to start work immediately upon arrival. “I have been travelling by night bus for more than 10 years,” Phannary said. “I choose night buses because I am busy during the day with my business, and I can save time by sleeping on the bus. When I arrive the next morning, I can immediately start work,” she added. When travelling to destinations such as Siem Reap or Banteay Meanchey, she prefers well known operators like Capitol, citing trust in experienced drivers.

Comfort and Convenience Appeal to Professionals and Families

Night travel also appeals to government officials and families who regularly commute to the provinces. Chuon Saveth, a senior officer at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, said he and his colleagues travel every three months to conduct training sessions. Cooler temperatures and quieter roads make night journeys more comfortable, and they often return to Phnom Penh the same way. Similarly, Keo Bunsoeun, a resident of Por Senchey district, said he and his wife frequently travelled overnight to visit relatives in Mondulkiri to avoid traffic congestion, choosing operators that provide insurance and skilled drivers.

Safety Concerns Temper Confidence After Fatal Crashes

Despite the convenience, confidence in night buses has been shaken by deadly accidents. Bunsoeun said a fatal crash in Kampong Thom last November left him fearful of overnight travel. “However, after seeing 16 people killed and 24 others injured in a night bus crash in Kampong Thom province last November due to a sleepy driver, we are now afraid to travel by night bus,” he said. He urged drivers to prioritise passenger safety, adding, “If an accident happens, passengers are in serious danger.” Such concerns highlight the ongoing tension between convenience and risk.

Tourists Praise Professional Operators

Foreign travellers have also embraced Cambodia’s night bus services, particularly when operated by reputable companies. British tourist Freja Gregor said he and his friends frequently used night buses between Thailand and Phnom Penh before recent border tensions. He praised Capitol Tours and Transport Company for its professionalism, saying, “I was very impressed with Capitol. The staff were amazing, and we were able to get our Cambodian visas at the border with minimal waiting time,” he said. “The staff guided us through security and met us on the other side, with plenty of stops along the way,” he added, noting the guide’s fluent English and attentive service.

Bus Companies Emphasise Insurance and Driver Rotation

Operators insist that safety remains a priority. Lim Seng, manager of Capitol Tours and Transport Company, said all passengers are insured and tickets are easily accessible through online platforms and phone bookings. The company operates standard and VIP services linking major cities including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang and Sihanoukville. “Since operating night bus services, we have not experienced any accidents because we assign two experienced drivers to each night trip,” he said. “The drivers take turns driving so that one can rest while the other drives,” he added. Other companies, such as Rith Mony Express & Logistics, also stress the use of dual drivers, modern facilities and nationwide coverage to maintain safety standards.

Driver Fatigue Remains a Critical Risk

Recent incidents have raised alarms about inconsistent practices across the industry. Some night buses have reportedly operated with only one driver, forcing exhausted drivers to stop and sleep roadside mid journey. While this may prevent immediate accidents, it exposes deeper issues around fatigue management. These risks were tragically illustrated in the November 20 2025 crash involving a Kia Grand Bird night bus in Kampong Thom, where 16 people died and 24 were injured after the bus plunged into a stream. Investigations found that a driver’s assistant was driving while fatigued, leading to speeding and loss of control.

Authorities Call for Strict Compliance With the Law

In response, transport authorities have reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety regulations. Phan Rim, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, stressed that all private transport companies must comply with insurance and traffic laws. “On behalf of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, I would like to appeal to all road users to strictly comply with traffic laws in order to prevent road accidents,” Rim said. He added that decisions on driver numbers rest with private companies, which must manage rotations responsibly to ensure safety.

Road Safety Trends Show Improvement but Vigilance Is Needed

Official statistics show that traffic crashes in Cambodia declined in 2025, with total accidents falling to 2,345 cases from 2,844 the previous year. Authorities credit stronger enforcement, improved infrastructure and greater public awareness. Although the report did not specify night bus related crashes, it noted a decrease in incidents caused by drowsy driving. Frequent traveller Saveth said he continues to use accredited night bus services for efficiency and rest. “Although travelling at night carries risks—especially due to driver fatigue or speeding—we still prefer night buses because we can rest and sleep during the journey,” he said.

Conclusion

Night buses have become an essential part of Cambodia’s transport landscape, offering convenience, affordability and time savings for busy travellers. While reputable operators and improved infrastructure have enhanced comfort and reliability, safety concerns linked to driver fatigue remain a serious challenge. As demand continues to grow, stricter enforcement, responsible management by bus companies and informed choices by passengers will be crucial to ensuring that overnight travel remains both efficient and safe.

Trump Proposes New Global Role for Cambodia in Middle East Peace Effort

US President Donald J. Trump has formally invited Prime Minister Hun Manet to take part in a newly proposed international body aimed at advancing peace in the Middle East, according to a White House letter dated January 16. The invitation positions Cambodia as a potential founding member of what Trump described as The Board of Peace, an international organisation and transitional governing administration envisioned under his administration’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict. The move signals Washington’s interest in engaging a broader range of countries, including Cambodia, in shaping a new multilateral approach to conflict resolution in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

The U.S. Invites Cambodia to Join New International Peace Initiative

Vision Behind the Board of Peace Initiative

In his letter to Prime Minister Hun Manet, Trump described the invitation as his “Great Honor” and framed the initiative as a “critically Historic and Magnificent effort to solidify Peace in the Middle East and, at the same time, to embark on a bold new approach to resolving Global Conflict”. He explained that the proposed Board of Peace would sit at the core of his broader plan, bringing together nations willing to assume responsibility for long term stability and reconstruction. Trump emphasized that participation would be reserved for countries ready to lead by example and invest in what he called a secure and prosperous future for generations to come.

International Backing and United Nations Endorsement

According to the letter, the proposal builds on Trump’s September 29, 2025 announcement of a 20 point roadmap to end the Gaza conflict, a plan he said had gained support from leaders across the Arab world, Israel, and Europe. He further noted that this vision received international legitimacy on November 17, when the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2803, which he said welcomed and endorsed the plan. Trump underscored the importance of this backing, stating, “At the heart of the Plan is The Board of Peace, the most impressive and consequential Board ever assembled, which will be established as a new International Organisation and Transitional Governing Administration.”

Cambodia’s Potential Role as a Founding Member

As chairman of the proposed Board, Trump formally invited Cambodia “to join as a Founding Member State, and become a party to the Charter of The Board of Peace”, with Prime Minister Hun Manet representing the Kingdom. The letter clarified that each member state would be allowed to appoint an authorised representative to attend and actively participate in board meetings. Trump also enclosed the Comprehensive Plan and a draft Charter, noting that both documents were open for signature and ratification, indicating that the initiative is moving beyond concept toward implementation.

Awaiting Phnom Penh’s Response

While the invitation places Cambodia in a potentially influential international role, Cambodian officials have not yet publicly responded. It remains unclear whether Phnom Penh will accept the proposal outright or seek further clarification on the structure, authority, and mandate of the proposed Board of Peace. Trump closed his letter on an optimistic note, writing, “I look forward to working with you, long into the future, toward the goal of establishing lasting WORLD PEACE, PROSPERITY, AND GREATNESS FOR ALL!” The coming weeks may determine whether Cambodia chooses to step onto this expanded diplomatic stage.

Conclusion

Trump’s invitation to Prime Minister Hun Manet reflects a broader effort to reshape global peace building through inclusive international leadership. For Cambodia, the proposal presents both an opportunity and a challenge, offering a chance to contribute to Middle East stability while requiring careful consideration of diplomatic commitments and global responsibilities. How Phnom Penh responds could shape its international profile and signal its willingness to engage more deeply in global conflict resolution efforts.

A New Eco Tourism Experience Takes Shape in Ream

Preah Sihanouk province is preparing to introduce a fresh eco tourism attraction designed to blend water based recreation with a relaxed natural dining experience, adding new energy to the coastal tourism scene. Located in Ream commune of Kampong Som city, the upcoming site aims to draw both local and international visitors looking for something beyond the usual beach activities. Scheduled to open in late January, the project reflects the province’s ongoing efforts to diversify its tourism offerings while highlighting the area’s natural environment and coastal charm.

Preah Sihanouk to launch new water-based eco-tourism attraction

Provincial Leaders Review Progress and Approve Development

The plan to launch this new attraction was officially shared during a site inspection held on Monday, led by Em Pheap, Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk province, alongside Kheang Phearum, Director of the Provincial Hall’s Planning and Investment Department, and other relevant officials. The technical working group visited the site known as the floating pier and water sports activities to assess readiness and ensure preparations were aligned with development goals, according to information released by the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Information Department. During the visit, Pheap confirmed that the provincial administration has agreed to support the project as part of its broader tourism development strategy.

Boosting Tourism Through Water Recreation and Nature Inspired Dining

Provincial officials see the project as a new tourism product that will strengthen the appeal of Ream and contribute to the overall attractiveness of Preah Sihanouk province. By combining water based recreational activities with dining in a natural setting, the site is expected to offer visitors a more immersive and relaxed experience. Pheap also emphasized the importance of responsible development, asking technical officials to carefully study potential environmental impacts and support the site owner in arranging the surroundings to meet required standards. He further encouraged the business owner to speed up the application process for all necessary licenses to ensure the attraction operates fully within legal frameworks.

Construction Timeline and Soft Opening Plans

According to the Provincial Information Department, construction of the new tourism project began in January 2024 and has progressed steadily. The project is now approaching completion, with a soft opening scheduled for January 30, 2026. This timeline reflects careful planning and coordination aimed at delivering a quality attraction that meets both visitor expectations and regulatory requirements, while supporting sustainable tourism growth in the province.

European Cuisine and Healthy Dining on the Water

Beyond recreational activities, the site will feature café services offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a relaxed waterside setting. The restaurant will focus mainly on European cuisine and healthy food options, using fresh and natural vegetables, fish, and meat. Meals will be prepared by experienced and highly skilled chefs, positioning the venue as a place where visitors can enjoy quality dining while surrounded by the calm atmosphere of Ream’s coastal environment.

Conclusion

The launch of this new water based eco tourism attraction marks another step forward for Preah Sihanouk province as it continues to expand and modernize its tourism offerings. By combining recreation, nature, and quality dining, the project has the potential to attract a wider range of visitors and encourage longer stays in the region. If developed responsibly and managed well, it could become a standout destination that supports sustainable tourism and reinforces Preah Sihanouk’s reputation as one of Cambodia’s most dynamic coastal provinces.

MLMUPC Announces Major Expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, marking a significant step forward for Cambodia’s maritime infrastructure. Central to the project is the construction of a new deep water container terminal designed to modernize port operations and support the country’s growing trade demands. The announcement reflects the government’s long term commitment to strengthening national logistics capabilities and improving Cambodia’s competitiveness in regional and global shipping networks.

MLMUPC Outlines Sihanoukville Port Expansion Project

Phased Development Backed by Japanese Concessional Loans

According to the ministry, the port expansion will be implemented in three carefully planned phases spanning from 2023 to 2030, with financial support provided through concessional loans from the Japanese government. This phased approach is intended to ensure technical precision, financial sustainability, and minimal disruption to ongoing port activities. Japanese backing also signals strong international confidence in Cambodia’s infrastructure development strategy and long standing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Capacity Upgrade to Support Large International Vessels

Once fully completed, the expanded port will be capable of accommodating large container vessels of up to 160,000 deadweight tons or approximately 15,000 TEUs. This upgrade will allow ships to dock and operate without depth limitations, enabling direct international shipping routes rather than relying on transshipment through foreign ports. The enhanced capacity is expected to reduce logistics costs, shorten delivery times, and make Cambodian exports more competitive in global markets.

Local Coordination and Site Assessment Efforts

To ensure smooth implementation, the MLMUPC has formed a dedicated working group in coordination with the Sihanoukville Provincial Administration. This team is responsible for inspecting and measuring the project area as well as identifying residents and existing structures that may be affected by the development. The ministry emphasized that proper assessment and coordination are essential to balancing infrastructure growth with community considerations and orderly urban development.

Strengthening Cambodia’s Role as a Regional Logistics Hub

The deep water terminal project forms part of Cambodia’s broader strategy to expand port capacity, stimulate international trade, and position Sihanoukville as a strategic logistics hub in Southeast Asia. By improving maritime connectivity and handling larger volumes of cargo, the port expansion is expected to support industrial growth, attract foreign investment, and reinforce Cambodia’s role in regional supply chains.

Conclusion

The expansion of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port represents a transformative milestone for Cambodia’s economic and trade landscape. With strong international financing, modern port capabilities, and coordinated local planning, the project is set to enhance efficiency, unlock new trade opportunities, and elevate Sihanoukville’s status as a key gateway for regional and global commerce.

Cambodia’s Growth Outlook Remains Strong Despite Global Uncertainty

Cambodia’s economy is expected to continue growing at a solid pace and stay broadly in line with regional peers while outperforming the global average, according to the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report. The World Bank forecasts Cambodia’s GDP growth at 4.3 percent in 2026, rising further to 5.1 percent in 2027. This trajectory places the country close to the East Asia and Pacific regional average, projected at 4.4 percent in 2026 and 4.3 percent in 2027, and well above the global growth outlook of 2.6 percent in 2026 and 2.7 percent in 2027. Despite ongoing global challenges such as trade tensions, high debt burdens, and policy uncertainty, Cambodia continues to rank among the faster growing economies worldwide, supported by resilient domestic demand, improving investment conditions, and a gradual normalization of trade following recent volatility.

4.3% Growth Forecast: World Bank Reveals Why Cambodia Is Beating the Global Economy in 2026?

Regional Trends Provide a Supportive Backdrop

Across East Asia and the Pacific, economic growth is expected to slow slightly in 2026 as the effects of earlier export front loading fade and global demand softens. China’s economic slowdown is a major factor pulling down the regional average, while growth in the rest of the region is projected to remain relatively resilient thanks to domestic policy support and steady investment. Cambodia’s outlook closely reflects this regional pattern. After an estimated expansion of 4.8 percent in 2025, growth is forecast to ease modestly in 2026 before strengthening again in 2027 as trade conditions stabilize and investment activity gains momentum. Even with this temporary moderation, Cambodia’s growth rate in 2026 is projected to be nearly double the global average, highlighting its relative strength in a challenging external environment. Read More: World Bank Warns Cambodia’s 0.8% Productivity Growth Is Less Than Half of What Vision 2050 Requires, With 41% of Informal Firms in Survival Mode

Global Economy Shows Stability Without Strong Momentum

At the global level, the World Bank expects economic growth to remain stable but subdued. An improved outlook for the United States led to a modest upward revision for 2026, helping to offset weaker momentum in other major economies. Growth in 2025 was temporarily boosted by a surge in trade activity as companies adjusted supply chains and accelerated exports ahead of possible policy changes. These short term supports are expected to fade in 2026, but easing financial conditions, lower inflation, and fiscal expansion in several large economies should help cushion the slowdown. Global inflation is projected to ease to 2.6 percent in 2026, which is expected to support household purchasing power and encourage investment. Despite this relative resilience, the World Bank cautioned that the current decade is on track to be the weakest period for global growth since the 1960s, driven by slower productivity gains and record levels of public and private debt.

Jobs, Investment, and Fiscal Discipline Are Key to Sustained Growth

The World Bank emphasized that maintaining growth across developing economies, including Cambodia, will depend heavily on job creation and productivity improvements. Over the next decade, around 1.2 billion young people are expected to enter the workforce in developing countries, significantly increasing pressure on labor markets and underscoring the need for private sector expansion and investment. Fiscal sustainability was also highlighted as a growing concern, with public debt in emerging and developing economies now at its highest level in more than 50 years. This makes credible fiscal management and investment friendly policies increasingly important. For Cambodia, the World Bank’s projections point to a relatively positive medium term outlook. Growth remains strong by global standards and broadly aligned with regional peers, but continued reforms to boost productivity, attract private capital, and strengthen the business environment will be essential to sustain momentum as global economic tailwinds gradually weaken.

Conclusion

Overall, Cambodia’s economic outlook for 2026 and beyond reflects resilience and steady progress in a complex global environment. While external risks remain and regional growth is expected to moderate in the near term, Cambodia is well positioned to maintain above average growth if it continues to focus on productivity, job creation, and sound fiscal management. With the right policy mix and sustained reform efforts, the country can build on its current momentum and support more inclusive and durable economic growth in the years ahead.

Cambodia Reaffirms Its Commitment to a Safe and Welcoming Tourism Environment

Cambodia has once again underscored its position as a safe, secure, and stable destination for both domestic and international travelers, reassuring visitors that tourism across the Kingdom continues without disruption. In a formal response issued on January 19, the Ministry of Tourism addressed recent Cambodia travel advisories released by certain foreign missions, emphasizing that these notices do not reflect the current reality on the ground. According to the ministry, the advisories and accompanying maps may have unintentionally created confusion among the public and travelers, especially international tourists, about Cambodia’s overall safety situation, despite the fact that daily life and tourism activities are proceeding as normal nationwide.

Is Cambodia Still a Safe Place to Travel in 2026?

Major Tourist Destinations Remain Fully Open and Operational

The Ministry of Tourism made it clear that Cambodia’s key tourism hubs are functioning normally and continue to welcome visitors with confidence. “Major tourism destinations, including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk and other tourism sites, continue to operate normally and remain fully open to warmly welcome visitors, with safety and security duly ensured,” the ministry stated. From cultural landmarks and heritage sites to coastal destinations and urban centers, tourism services, infrastructure, and hospitality operations remain intact, allowing travelers to explore Cambodia without interruption or concern.

Ministry of Tourism Calls for Responsible and Accurate Information Sharing

Highlighting the importance of clear communication, the Ministry of Tourism reaffirmed its openness to cooperation with foreign diplomatic missions, media organizations, and tourism stakeholders. The ministry stressed its ongoing commitment to providing accurate and factual tourism related information to support informed travel decisions and to ensure balanced reporting. It also urged the public, embassies, national and international media, tourists, and all relevant stakeholders to help share information responsibly, recognizing that accurate messaging plays a vital role in maintaining traveler confidence and protecting Cambodia’s tourism reputation.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s message is clear and consistent. The country remains open, safe, and ready to welcome visitors from around the world. While acknowledging that misunderstandings can arise from incomplete or unclear information, the Ministry of Tourism continues to emphasize transparency, cooperation, and responsibility in communication. For travelers considering Cambodia, the reassurance from authorities reflects a stable tourism environment where safety, hospitality, and cultural richness remain at the heart of the travel experience.

Cambodia’s Air Travel Makes a Strong Comeback in 2025

Cambodia’s aviation sector staged an impressive recovery in 2025, with nearly seven million passengers passing through the country’s airports, signaling renewed confidence in regional and international travel. According to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, total passenger traffic reached 6,988,259, marking a 12 percent increase compared to the previous year. Flight activity also climbed steadily, with 64,821 two way flights recorded, up 11 percent year on year. This rebound reflects not only the return of travelers but also the broader reopening of global mobility, positioning air travel once again as a vital engine for Cambodia’s economic and tourism recovery.

EconomyAir travel in Cambodia surges as nearly 7 million passengers fly in 2025

Growing Flights and Cargo Reflect Expanding Connectivity

Beyond passenger growth, Cambodia’s aviation data highlights a broader expansion in air transport activity. Air cargo volumes surged by 21 percent to 93,889 tons, underscoring rising demand for trade, logistics, and time sensitive goods. This increase suggests stronger links between Cambodia and regional supply chains, as well as improved confidence among businesses relying on air freight. Together, higher flight numbers, passenger traffic, and cargo volumes point to a more resilient and diversified aviation sector supporting both tourism and commerce.

Regional Demand and Airline Expansion Drive Passenger Growth

SSCA spokesperson Sinn Chansereyvutha said the surge in air travel was fueled by the gradual recovery of outbound Chinese tourism, alongside steady demand from neighboring and key markets such as Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan. The easing of travel restrictions and the expansion of airline capacity played a crucial role in restoring traveler confidence. He noted that the restoration and expansion of airline operations not only boosted passenger numbers but also strengthened Cambodia’s international connectivity, making travel more accessible and efficient for both leisure and business travelers.

Cambodia Strengthens Its International Aviation Network

As airline routes returned and expanded, Cambodia enhanced its global reach, now connecting directly with destinations across eight countries. These include China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan. This growing network reflects Cambodia’s strategic efforts to integrate more deeply into regional and global aviation systems. Improved connectivity supports tourism growth, attracts investment, and facilitates easier movement of people and goods, reinforcing the country’s role as an emerging hub in Southeast Asia.

Techo International Airport Signals a New Era for Aviation

The opening of Techo International Airport in September 2025 marked a significant milestone for Cambodia’s aviation ambitions. Authorities describe the new airport as a catalyst for the next phase of sector development, designed to handle increasing passenger volumes while meeting international standards for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Combined with expanding air routes, the new facility strengthens Cambodia’s goal of becoming a regional aviation hub, capable of supporting long term economic growth and deeper integration with global travel networks.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s air travel rebound in 2025 reflects more than rising passenger numbers. It signals renewed regional confidence, stronger international connections, and a clear commitment to modernizing aviation infrastructure. With growing demand, expanding routes, and the launch of Techo International Airport, the country is well positioned to sustain momentum and elevate its role in regional and global aviation in the years ahead.

Siem Reap, home to Cambodia’s world famous Angkor Archaeological Park, has once again captured international attention after being named one of the world’s best cultural destinations for 2026 by global travel platform Tripadvisor. The province ranked 13th among the 25 Best Cultural Destinations worldwide as part of Tripadvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards, placing it alongside major global cities such as Singapore, London, Kraków, and Paris. This recognition reinforces Siem Reap’s enduring appeal as a cultural and historical hub, driven by its unique blend of ancient architecture, spiritual heritage, and living traditions that continue to attract travelers from around the world.

Siem Reap ranks among World’s Best Cultural Destinations for 2026

Angkor Wat Sunrise Described as a Profound Global Experience

In its official citation, Tripadvisor highlighted the emotional impact of visiting Angkor’s ancient monuments, particularly the iconic sunrise at Angkor Wat.

The platform described the moment in vivid terms, stating, “When the morning light washes over the overgrown temples and ruins of Angkor Wat, a simple Siem Reap sunrise becomes a profound event,” adding that “The ancient structures are contained within one of the largest religious complexes in the world.” This powerful imagery underscores why Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples continue to resonate deeply with international visitors, offering not just sightseeing but a meaningful cultural and spiritual experience.

Traveller Reviews Drive Tripadvisor’s Prestigious Rankings

Tripadvisor’s Best Cultural Destinations rankings are based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings collected over a 12 month period, making the recognition a direct reflection of visitor satisfaction and global sentiment. Siem Reap’s placement on the list highlights consistent praise from travelers who value authenticity, heritage, and immersive cultural experiences. The ranking also signals strong global confidence in Siem Reap as a destination that delivers lasting memories and high quality travel experiences, even amid growing competition from other cultural cities worldwide.

Tourism Performance Highlights Siem Reap’s Economic Importance

The global recognition comes at a time when Siem Reap continues to function as the driving force of Cambodia’s tourism economy. According to a year end report from Angkor Enterprise, the Angkor Archaeological Park welcomed 955,131 foreign visitors in 2025, generating more than $44.7 million in ticket revenue. While visitor numbers saw a slight decline compared to the previous year, revenue performance remained strong, reflecting the destination’s enduring value and its ability to attract high interest international travelers. This economic contribution further reinforces the province’s strategic importance to national tourism and related industries.

UNESCO Heritage Status Anchors Siem Reap’s Global Appeal

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, the Angkor Archaeological Park remains Cambodia’s most significant tourist attraction and a cornerstone of the country’s cultural identity. The 12th century Angkor Thom royal city and the iconic Angkor Wat continue to be recognized by Tripadvisor as the primary reasons international travelers journey to Siem Reap. Their historical significance, architectural scale, and spiritual legacy ensure that the destination remains relevant and compelling for new generations of global travelers seeking meaningful cultural exploration.

Conclusion

Siem Reap’s ranking among the world’s best cultural destinations for 2026 is more than a travel accolade. It is a reflection of the province’s timeless heritage, global reputation, and central role in Cambodia’s tourism economy. As international travel continues to recover and evolve, Siem Reap stands well positioned to strengthen its status as a must visit cultural destination, offering experiences that are not only visually stunning but deeply profound and memorable.

Cambodia EU Trade Surges to $5B in 2025 Here Is What the Numbers Really Show

Cambodia’s EU Trade Surges Past 5 Billion Dollars in 2025

Cambodia closed 2025 on a high note in its trade relationship with Europe as exports to the European Union reached US$5.01 billion, reflecting a strong year on year growth of 13.5 percent based on the Ministry of Commerce report released in mid January 2026, a result that highlights how Cambodian producers are becoming more competitive and better connected to global supply chains. This surge was fueled by a diverse mix of manufacturing, agro processing and newly emerging industrial products, with garments, footwear and travel goods continuing to lead the way alongside bicycles, car tyres and EU compliant agricultural exports such as milled rice and cassava, all of which show how the country is moving beyond traditional exports toward higher value and more regulated international markets.

Key EU Markets Driving Cambodia’s Export Performance

The European Union remained one of Cambodia’s most important trading partners in 2025, accounting for 16 percent of the country’s total exports, with Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium standing out as the Kingdom’s largest buyers. Spain topped the list with US$1.19 billion in Cambodian goods, followed by the Netherlands at US$1.01 billion, France at US$568 million and Belgium at US$503 million, each posting impressive double digit growth of 11.5 percent, 20.6 percent, 12.5 percent and 20.7 percent respectively, showing solid demand across multiple European markets. Germany, while still one of the top destinations, recorded a slight decline of 0.8 percent to US$1.10 billion, suggesting a modest cooling in that particular market even as overall EU trade remained robust.

Preferential Tariffs and Strong Cooperation Fuel Trade Momentum

Government officials say this steady growth did not happen by chance but is the result of closer cooperation between Cambodia and the EU to expand market access and improve technical support for exporters. H.E. Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, explained the underlying advantage behind this performance by saying, “The positive trade momentum is supported by the EU’s preferential tariff system, which provides duty-free and quota-free access for most Cambodian products,” a benefit that continues to make Cambodian goods more attractive and competitive in European markets while encouraging local producers to meet international standards.

EU Imports into Cambodia Continue to Ease

While exports to Europe surged, Cambodia’s imports from the EU moved in the opposite direction, falling to US$863 million in 2025, a drop of 5.8 percent compared to the previous year, indicating a shift in trade dynamics and possibly stronger domestic or regional sourcing. The goods Cambodia typically buys from Europe include machinery, household appliances, pharmaceuticals, vehicles, pearls and precious stones, textiles and electrical equipment, reflecting Europe’s role as a supplier of high value and technologically advanced products rather than everyday consumer goods.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s record breaking export performance to the European Union in 2025 underscores the country’s growing role in global trade and its ability to compete in demanding international markets. With strong demand for both manufactured and agricultural products, supportive EU trade policies and expanding cooperation between both sides, the outlook for Cambodia’s export driven growth remains promising. If this momentum continues, the Kingdom is well positioned to further strengthen its economic ties with Europe while creating more opportunities for local industries, farmers and workers.
