A Symbol of National Pride and Historical Significance

The Funan Techo Canal project is more than just an infrastructure initiative—it’s a national rejuvenation project. The canal is a powerful symbol of Cambodia’s historical glory during the Funan era, a time when the Khmer civilization was at its peak, serving as the key commercial and cultural gateway of the Mekong region. By reconnecting with this illustrious past, Cambodia is not only preserving its rich heritage but also revitalizing it for future generations.

This project serves as a reminder of the times when Cambodia was a thriving center of trade and culture, a beacon of influence in the region. The Funan Techo Canal aims to rekindle that spirit, instilling a sense of pride and national identity among Cambodians. It celebrates the ingenuity and resilience of the Khmer civilization, which has always been intricately linked to its river systems and waterways. As a living monument, the canal is a tribute to our ancestors’ achievements and a clarion call to honor our past while forging ahead to build a brighter future.

Economic Development and Transformation

Beyond its symbolic importance, the Funan Techo Canal holds immense economic potential. By providing a direct link between Cambodia’s inland waterways and the sea, the canal is set to revolutionize logistics and transport within the country. This enhanced connectivity will not only streamline the movement of goods but also attract significant investment, particularly in the development of economic zones and industrial parks along the canal.

The resulting industrial growth is expected to create numerous job opportunities, driving urbanization and improving the quality of life for local communities. Modern infrastructure, better services, and sustainable economic growth are envisioned outcomes of this transformative project. The canal is more than a transportation route; it is a catalyst for economic progress, ensuring that development benefits are widely shared across Cambodia.

Strengthening Political Independence and Sovereignty

The Funan Techo Canal project also carries strategic importance for Cambodia’s political independence. By developing a robust waterway transport system, Cambodia can reduce its reliance on external entities, thereby increasing its self-reliance. This move towards greater self-sufficiency strengthens the nation’s sovereignty, allowing Cambodia to assert more control over its infrastructure and resources.

The canal project is a bold statement of Cambodia’s commitment to national ownership and self-determination. It symbolizes the country’s ability to navigate the complexities of global politics with confidence and autonomy. By investing in such strategic infrastructure, Cambodia is charting its own course, safeguarding its national interests, and reinforcing its independence on the global stage.

Inspiring National Unity and Collective Strength

One of the most profound impacts of the Funan Techo Canal project is its potential to inspire national unity and strength. This project transcends regional and social divides, bringing together people from all walks of life in a shared vision of progress and prosperity. It is a powerful reminder of what Cambodia can achieve when its people unite with a common purpose.

The canal project is not just about building infrastructure; it’s about building a stronger, more unified nation. It fosters a sense of belonging and shared destiny, serving as a source of hope and pride for all Cambodians. As the country works towards the successful completion of this project, the canal will continue to stand as a testament to the boundless potential that lies within Cambodia’s unity.

Looking Towards the Future

The Funan Techo Canal is a visionary project that encapsulates the essence of Cambodia’s past, present, and future. It promotes national pride, drives economic development, strengthens political independence, and fosters national unity. As Cambodia embarks on this transformative journey, the canal will remain a symbol of the nation’s enduring spirit and potential.

A Deep Dive into the Enduring Affection and Strong Ties

Cambodia and China share a multifaceted relationship that has evolved over decades. The bonds between the two nations span historical, economic, and political dimensions, with Chinese investment and influence becoming increasingly prominent in Cambodia. This blog post explores the reasons behind the deep-rooted affection the Chinese have for Cambodia, highlighting key factors that contribute to this strong connection.

Cambodia-China Relation
Why Chinese Love Cambodia?

1. Cambodia-China Long-Lasting Relationship: A Historical Perspective

The relationship between Cambodia and China dates back centuries, rooted in cultural exchanges and trade. Historically, Chinese traders and explorers ventured into Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, fostering early interactions. In modern times, the relationship took a significant turn during the Cold War era when China provided support to Cambodia amid regional conflicts.

Since the early 2000s, diplomatic ties have strengthened considerably. The establishment of strategic partnerships and bilateral agreements has solidified this relationship. Cambodia and China have cooperated on various fronts, including infrastructure development, trade, and cultural exchange, further deepening their connection. The historical ties have laid a strong foundation for the present-day flourishing relationship.

2. Economic Growth: A Symbiotic Relationship

Cambodia’s rapid economic growth has been a key attraction for Chinese investors. Over the past decade, Cambodia has experienced robust economic expansion, driven by sectors such as tourism, manufacturing, and real estate. Chinese businesses have recognized the potential of this growing market and have significantly invested in Cambodia’s infrastructure and industries.

Chinese investments have flowed into various sectors, including construction, finance, and telecommunications. Projects like the construction of new roads, bridges, and commercial complexes highlight China’s role in Cambodia’s economic development. The mutual economic benefits have strengthened the bond between the two nations, creating a positive feedback loop of growth and investment.

3. Political Stability: A Safe Haven for Investment

Political stability is a critical factor for foreign investors, and Cambodia offers a relatively stable political environment compared to other regions. The Cambodian government’s commitment to maintaining political order and fostering a business-friendly environment has been reassuring for Chinese investors.

The stability of Cambodia’s political landscape, coupled with supportive government policies, has created an attractive investment climate. This stability has encouraged Chinese businesses to establish a significant presence in Cambodia, further enhancing the economic ties between the two countries.

4. Strategic Business Location: Gateway to Southeast Asia

Cambodia’s strategic location in Southeast Asia makes it a valuable business hub for Chinese companies looking to expand their footprint in the region. Situated at the crossroads of major regional markets, Cambodia provides a gateway to neighboring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.

Chinese businesses view Cambodia as a strategic point for expanding their operations and accessing broader Southeast Asian markets. The country’s geographical advantage, combined with improving infrastructure, makes it an appealing destination for companies seeking to leverage its strategic location.

5. Chinese Foreign Policy: Encouraging Investment

China’s foreign policy plays a crucial role in encouraging Chinese businessmen and investors to explore opportunities in Cambodia. The Chinese government has actively promoted economic diplomacy, seeking to strengthen ties with key partners like Cambodia.

Through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has sought to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation with countries across Asia. Cambodia has been a beneficiary of these policies, receiving substantial investment and development aid from China. This strategic approach aligns with China’s broader objectives of expanding its economic influence and fostering stable, long-term partnerships.

6. Logistics and Product Preferences: Chinese Goods in High Demand

The logistics sector in Cambodia has experienced significant improvements, thanks in part to Chinese investment in infrastructure. The development of ports, highways, and logistics hubs has facilitated smoother import and export processes, benefiting both Cambodian and Chinese businesses.

Cambodian consumers have shown a strong preference for Chinese products, which are perceived as high-quality and affordable. This preference is reflected in the popularity of Chinese-made goods in Cambodian markets. The strong demand for Chinese products further reinforces the economic ties between the two countries, with Chinese companies playing a key role in meeting consumer needs.

7. The Private Education System: Embracing the Chinese Language

Education is another area where Chinese influence is evident in Cambodia. The proliferation of private schools and educational institutions that offer Chinese language programs highlights the growing interest in Chinese culture and language.

Many Cambodian students are enrolling in Chinese language courses to enhance their career prospects and cultural understanding. The presence of Chinese language schools and cultural centers reflects the strong ties between the two countries and the desire of Cambodians to connect more deeply with Chinese culture.

8. Shinanuoville: A Chinese Town in Cambodia

Shinanuoville, often referred to as a “Chinese town,” exemplifies the strong presence of Chinese expatriates and businesses in Cambodia. This town has become a focal point for Chinese investment and community life in Cambodia.

The development of Shinanuoville has attracted a significant number of Chinese nationals, creating a vibrant community that contributes to the local economy. The town’s transformation into a hub for Chinese businesses and residents underscores the deepening relationship between Cambodia and China.

9. Chinese Construction Companies: Building Cambodia’s Future

Chinese construction companies have played a pivotal role in Cambodia’s infrastructure development. Major projects, such as highways, bridges, and urban developments, are often undertaken by Chinese firms in collaboration with the Cambodian government.

The construction of key infrastructure projects not only enhances Cambodia’s connectivity but also strengthens the economic ties between the two nations. These projects provide significant employment opportunities and contribute to the overall growth of the Cambodian economy, highlighting the positive impact of Chinese investment.

Conclusion

The love between the Chinese and Cambodia is a complex and multifaceted relationship built on a foundation of historical ties, economic cooperation, and strategic interests. The deepening connection between the two nations is evident in various sectors, from economic growth and infrastructure development to education and cultural exchange. While challenges exist, the overall trajectory of the relationship remains positive, with both countries benefiting from their strong partnership.

As Cambodia continues to develop and attract international investment, the enduring affection of the Chinese for Cambodia will likely remain a central aspect of their relationship. The mutual benefits and shared interests between the two nations will continue to drive their collaboration, contributing to a prosperous future for both Cambodia and China.

Top 10 Reasons Why Cambodia Needs Manpower to Tap AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often perceived as a technology that could eventually reduce the need for human intervention in various tasks. However, the current landscape in Cambodia presents a different picture. As AI continues to evolve, the country needs to harness its potential by cultivating a robust talent pool. At a recent business forum in Phnom Penh on July 31 2024, on ‘Beyond Buzzwords: Leveraging AI/Machine Learning for Tangible Business Outcomes,’ experts emphasized the pressing need for manpower to effectively integrate AI into Cambodia’s growth strategy. Here are the top 10 reasons why Cambodia urgently needs manpower to tap into AI.

A panel discussion took place on Wednesday at the forum titled ‘Beyond Buzzwords: Leveraging AI/Machine Learning for Tangible Business Outcomes,’ organized by the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) at Raintree.
A panel discussion took place on Wednesday at the forum titled ‘Beyond Buzzwords: Leveraging AI/Machine Learning for Tangible Business Outcomes,’ organized by the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) at Raintree.

1. Limited Current AI Talent Pool

One of the most pressing challenges highlighted at the forum is Cambodia’s limited AI talent pool. Rottana Ly, R&D Director at the Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT), revealed that only 300 students are currently admitted into AI courses across the country. This small number is insufficient to meet the growing demands of businesses that are increasingly relying on AI for various functions. As businesses in Cambodia begin to explore AI, the need for more qualified professionals becomes critical. “Cambodia needs to produce more AI talent to meet the emerging demand in businesses and to make the country grow faster,” Ly stated.

2. Rapid Digital Transformation

Cambodia is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, with more businesses adopting digital technologies to improve efficiency and competitiveness. AI and Machine Learning (ML) are at the forefront of this transformation, offering new opportunities for growth and innovation. However, to fully capitalize on these technologies, the country needs a workforce skilled in AI. Without adequate manpower, the digital transformation could stall, leaving Cambodia behind in the regional tech race.

3. Economic Leapfrogging Opportunities

AI presents a unique opportunity for Cambodia to leapfrog in economic development. Fee Vu, Chief Strategy Officer at IITC.ai, pointed out that although Cambodia may have missed some initial steps in AI, the country can still leapfrog to the next level with the right talent. By investing in manpower and training, Cambodia can bypass certain stages of development that other countries have gone through, quickly advancing to become a leader in AI applications, particularly in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing.

4. Agricultural Efficiency and Innovation

Agriculture remains a backbone of Cambodia’s economy, and AI can significantly enhance productivity and efficiency in this sector. For instance, AI-powered Internet of Things (IoT) systems can monitor soil moisture and weather conditions to optimize water usage in rice fields. This not only conserves water but also increases crop yields. However, implementing such advanced technology requires skilled professionals who can design, manage, and maintain these AI systems. The current shortage of manpower in this area could hinder the adoption of AI in agriculture, affecting the livelihoods of many Cambodians.

5. Addressing Socio-Economic Challenges

While AI is expected to take over certain mundane tasks, there are concerns about the long-term socio-economic impact. Tomas Pokorny, Digital & Technology Committee Chairman at EuroCham, warned that the loss of jobs due to AI could lead to socio-economic problems 40 to 50 years from now unless proactive measures are taken. By investing in AI manpower now, Cambodia can mitigate these risks by creating new job opportunities in AI development, implementation, and maintenance. This proactive approach can ensure that the benefits of AI are shared broadly across society.

6. Enhancing Quality Data Management

The success of AI and ML in any business relies heavily on the availability of high-quality data. Cambodia, like many other countries, faces challenges in ensuring the quality and accessibility of data. During the forum, Fee Vu emphasized the importance of developing a master database that all businesses and stakeholders can access. To achieve this, skilled data scientists and AI experts are needed to create, manage, and maintain such databases. Without adequate manpower, Cambodia risks falling short in its data management capabilities, which are crucial for AI to deliver meaningful outcomes.

7. Youth as Catalysts for AI Adoption

Cambodia’s youthful population is a significant asset in the country’s AI journey. Adrienne Ravez-Men, a Senior Consultant and Advisor in Digital Innovation & Strategic Communications, highlighted that the young, tech-savvy generation in Cambodia is well-positioned to take AI forward. “The culture of innovation is here,” she said, underscoring the potential of young Cambodians to embrace and drive AI initiatives. However, to unlock this potential, there needs to be substantial investment in education and training programs that equip the youth with the necessary AI skills.

8. Expanding AI in Healthcare

AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare in Cambodia by providing better diagnostic tools, personalized treatment plans, and efficient management of healthcare resources. Fee Vu demonstrated the capabilities of an AI-powered SmartChat developed for the health sector, which can answer specific queries and provide empathetic advice. However, to integrate such AI technologies into the healthcare system, Cambodia needs a workforce that understands both healthcare and AI. This cross-disciplinary expertise is currently lacking and must be developed to ensure that AI can be fully utilized in improving the country’s healthcare system.

9. Driving Innovation in Urban Development

As Cambodia’s cities grow, AI can play a crucial role in urban planning and management. AI can be used to optimize traffic flow, manage waste more efficiently, and reduce energy consumption, thereby improving the quality of life in urban areas. However, realizing these benefits requires a skilled workforce that can develop and implement AI-driven solutions tailored to Cambodia’s unique urban challenges. Without sufficient manpower, the potential for AI to drive innovation in urban development could remain untapped.

10. Building a Sustainable AI Ecosystem

Finally, for Cambodia to fully harness the potential of AI, it needs to build a sustainable AI ecosystem. This involves not only developing AI talent but also fostering a culture of innovation, encouraging collaboration between businesses and academia, and ensuring that AI applications are aligned with the country’s development goals. A sustainable AI ecosystem requires continuous investment in human capital, research and development, and the creation of supportive policies and infrastructure. By focusing on manpower development, Cambodia can lay the foundation for a thriving AI ecosystem that drives long-term economic growth and development.

Conclusion

The future of AI in Cambodia is full of promise, but the journey towards fully tapping into its potential is just beginning. As highlighted by experts at the recent forum in Phnom Penh, the country’s immediate priority must be to develop a strong AI talent pool. This will not only meet the growing demands of businesses but also position Cambodia as a competitive player in the global AI landscape. By investing in manpower now, Cambodia can ensure that it is well-prepared to harness the power of AI for sustainable development and prosperity. As Rottana Ly aptly put it, “Cambodia needs to produce more AI talent to meet the emerging demand in businesses and to make the country grow faster.” The time to act is now.

The leaders also discussed enhancing cooperation between Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos in areas such as trade, economy, investment, tourism, and infrastructure. Mr. Hun Sen’s visit to Hanoi included paying respects to the late Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The increasing collaboration between Cambodia and Vietnam marks a significant milestone in their bilateral relations. Vietnam’s recent commitment to boost its electricity supply to Cambodia from the current 250 MW to 400 MW by 2025 is poised to bring numerous benefits to Cambodians and businesses in the Kingdom. This article delves into the details of this plan and explores how it will impact Cambodia’s economy and energy landscape.

Boosting the Kingdom’s Economy

Economic Activity and Prevention of Power Shortages

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam announced the plan during a meeting with Senate President Hun Sen in Hanoi on July 25. This increase in electricity supply is expected to:

  • Enhance Economic Activity: The additional power will support the growing industrial and commercial sectors, fostering economic growth.
  • Prevent Blackouts: By increasing the power supply, Cambodia can avoid blackouts and power shortages, ensuring a stable energy supply for businesses and households.

Supporting Energy Demand

Cambodia currently imports about 25% of its power from neighboring countries, including Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The Kingdom’s Power Development Plan (PDP) 2022-2040 projects a significant rise in energy demand:

  • Projected Demand: Expected to reach 66 TWh by 2040.
  • Annual Increase: An average annual increase in demand of 19%, with peak demand growing from 508 MW in 2012 to 2,026 MW by 2021.
  • ADB Predictions: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) forecasts that Cambodia’s energy needs will double by 2030 due to population growth, economic expansion, and urbanization.

Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation

Cambodia-Vietnam-Laos Cooperation

During their meeting, the leaders also discussed enhancing cooperation between Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. Key areas of focus included:

  • Trade and Investment: Boosting bilateral trade and investment to support economic growth.
  • Tourism and Infrastructure: Developing tourism and infrastructure projects to promote regional connectivity.
  • Energy Cooperation: Strengthening energy cooperation to ensure a stable power supply across the region.

Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA)

The Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA) aims to improve economic activities and infrastructure connectivity in border areas. Initiated by Senate President Hun Sen, the CLV-DTA focuses on:

  • Economic Connectivity: Connecting economies and infrastructure in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
  • Infrastructure Development: Developing roads, electricity networks, trade routes, and tourism facilities.
  • Regional Cooperation: Enhancing cooperation in education, training, human resources, and health.

Achieving Carbon Neutrality

Renewable Energy and Carbon Reduction

Cambodia is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, necessitating a shift away from coal-fired power plants. The country’s energy strategy includes:

  • Diverse Energy Sources: Utilizing hydropower, coal, diesel, solar, and biomass energy.
  • Future Plans: Adopting natural gas, LNG, or hydrogen for power production.
  • Technological Innovations: Incorporating renewables, nuclear power, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies to achieve deep decarbonization.

Expert Insights

Han Phoumin, Senior Energy Economist at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), emphasizes the importance of adopting a range of technologies to meet Cambodia’s carbon neutrality goals. These technologies are crucial for reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable energy development.

Conclusion

Vietnam’s decision to increase its electricity supply to Cambodia by 2025 is a strategic move that promises to bolster Cambodia’s economy and energy security. This collaboration will not only prevent power shortages but also support the Kingdom’s ambitious energy plans and carbon neutrality goals. As Cambodia continues to develop its energy infrastructure and enhance regional cooperation, the benefits of this increased power supply will be felt by businesses and citizens alike.

Top 12 Reasons Why Phnom Penh Could Become a Business Hub

Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, is rapidly emerging as a promising business hub in the Indochina Peninsula and the ASEAN region. Here are twelve compelling reasons why Phnom Penh could become a central business hub, supported by recent updates and expert opinions.

During the inauguration ceremony of ‘Xi Jinping Boulevard’ on July 19, 2024 attended by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and the First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Ambassador Wang remarked that he has visited Cambodia numerous times. Each visit left him highly impressed by the swift progress in Cambodia’s economy and society, as well as the continually evolving landscape of Phnom Penh.

Ambassador Wang Wenbin on Phnom Penh’s Potential said “Phnom Penh could become a business centre and energy hub in Indochina and ASEAN in the future due to the development of this city growing rapidly. I have visited Cambodia many times already and every time I came, I was very impressed with the rapid development of the Cambodian economy and society and the image of the city changing from day to day. If we travel along Xi Jinping Boulevard, we will see big buildings stand out and see a better and brighter future for Phnom Penh. I believe that in the future Phnom Penh will be an important business centre in the Indochina Peninsula and Southeast Asia with full of vibrancy and energy. China-Cambodia friendship has a long history, deep roots and China-Cambodia ironclad friendship has become a model of international relations. As the new Ambassador to Cambodia, I look forward to cooperating with friends from all parts of both countries, strictly implementing the consensus between the leaders of the two countries in all fields, and promoting the ironclad friendship of China and Cambodia.”

Dr. Chey Tech, a socio-economic researcher, said “ “The remarks of the new Chinese ambassador refer to recent developments in Cambodia and Cambodia’s geographical location related to the development of infrastructure under the auspices of the Chinese government, particularly in relation to the ‘One Belt and Road’ project, with the support of other development partners, especially local connections such as highways and expressways. In terms of geographical factors, Cambodia is located in the centre of Southeast Asia in the ASEAN region. Thus, Cambodia has the potential to attract investment and exports to the region and the world. The goal of turning Phnom Penh and Cambodia into a major hub in the Indochina Peninsula as well as in the ASEAN region requires time and effort from the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) because the government still faces many challenges related to logistics, transportation, cost of electricity, taxes, trade facilitation, business registration, corruption and governance that need further improvement.”

1. Rapid Economic Growth

Phnom Penh has been experiencing significant economic growth. According to the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wenbin, the city’s development is growing rapidly, making it a potential future business center and energy hub in Indochina and ASEAN. He highlighted this during the inauguration ceremony of ‘Xi Jinping Boulevard’ on July 19, 2024.

2. Strategic Geographical Location

Cambodia’s central location in Southeast Asia makes Phnom Penh an ideal hub for business activities. Dr. Chey Tech, a socio-economic researcher, emphasized that Cambodia’s position in the center of the ASEAN region allows it to attract investment and facilitate exports to both regional and global markets.

3. Infrastructure Development

Phnom Penh is witnessing extensive infrastructure development under the auspices of the Chinese government’s ‘One Belt and Road’ initiative. This includes the construction of highways, expressways, and other critical infrastructure projects that enhance connectivity and facilitate trade.

4. Foreign Investment

The city is attracting substantial foreign investment, particularly from China. Ambassador Wang noted that the ironclad friendship between China and Cambodia has led to significant economic cooperation, which is expected to continue boosting Phnom Penh’s growth as a business hub.

5. Business-Friendly Policies

The Cambodian government has been implementing business-friendly policies to attract foreign and local investors. These include tax incentives, streamlined business registration processes, and efforts to improve trade facilitation. Dr. Tech pointed out that while challenges remain, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) is making strides in improving the business environment.

6. Growing Real Estate Market

Phnom Penh’s real estate market is booming, with the construction of high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and commercial complexes. Ambassador Wang mentioned that traveling along Xi Jinping Boulevard reveals the city’s skyline filled with big buildings, indicating a bright future for Phnom Penh’s real estate sector.

7. Skilled Workforce

The city is home to a growing, young, and increasingly skilled workforce. Educational institutions are expanding their offerings, and vocational training programs are being enhanced to meet the demands of the evolving job market, thereby providing businesses with a capable talent pool.

8. Tourism and Hospitality Industry

Phnom Penh’s tourism and hospitality industry is thriving, contributing significantly to the local economy. The city’s rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and modern amenities attract tourists and business travelers alike, fostering a conducive environment for business meetings and conferences.

9. Technological Advancements

With the advent of digital transformation, Phnom Penh is embracing new technologies. The city is seeing increased adoption of digital platforms, e-commerce, and fintech solutions, which are essential for modern business operations and competitiveness.

10. Political Stability

Cambodia’s political stability is a crucial factor in fostering a conducive business environment. The government’s commitment to maintaining stability and implementing reforms to enhance governance and reduce corruption is pivotal for attracting long-term investment.

11. Economic Diversification

Phnom Penh is diversifying its economy beyond traditional sectors like agriculture and textiles. The city is now focusing on developing sectors such as finance, technology, and manufacturing, providing a broader base for economic growth and investment opportunities.

12. Support from International Partners

International development partners are playing a vital role in Phnom Penh’s growth. The support from countries like China and international organizations through funding, expertise, and technology transfer is accelerating the city’s transformation into a business hub.

Conclusion

Phnom Penh’s potential to become a business hub in Indochina and the ASEAN region is supported by its rapid economic growth, strategic location, robust infrastructure development, and favorable business policies. While challenges remain, the combined efforts of the Cambodian government, international partners, and the private sector are paving the way for a vibrant and dynamic business environment.

History of Making Money Online in Cambodia

The advent of the internet has created a plethora of opportunities for earning a living, and Cambodia has not been left behind in this digital revolution. Since the early 2000s, enterprising individuals in the country have harnessed the potential of the internet, establishing the foundation for what is now referred to as making money online (MMO). This article explores the evolution of MMO in Cambodia, from its early days to the current landscape, including the challenges and opportunities that have shaped this journey.

History of Making Money Online in Cambodia
History of Making Money Online in Cambodia

The Early Days of MMO in Cambodia

In the early 2000s, the internet began to gain traction in Cambodia, and with it came new opportunities for making money online. Resourceful individuals started tapping into this potential by writing promotional articles on platforms like Google’s Blogger. These articles often featured Google AdSense banners, which allowed bloggers to earn money based on the number of clicks or impressions their ads received. This period marked the nascent stage of MMO in Cambodia, setting the groundwork for future developments.

The Rise of Affiliate Programs

As the internet continued to evolve, so did the methods for making money online. The Amazon Affiliate Program (AAP) became particularly popular among Cambodian online entrepreneurs. People created product review sites, promoting various items available on Amazon and earning commissions through affiliate links. This trend illustrated the growing sophistication of Cambodian internet users in leveraging global platforms to generate income.

The Impact of Social Media

The proliferation of social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube brought new dimensions to MMO. Content creators began to monetize their work through these platforms, with Facebook’s Instant Articles, launched in 2015, being a notable example. This feature allowed publishers to post articles directly within the Facebook app, earning money based on ad impressions. The ease and speed of content delivery through Instant Articles led to a surge in the creation of news websites and online publications, further expanding the MMO landscape in Cambodia.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations

While the opportunities for making money online grew, so did the ethical challenges. Plagiarism became a significant issue, with some content creators copying articles from other sources or even from different countries. This practice not only undermined the original content creators but also led to the spread of misinformation. The closure of Facebook’s Instant Articles feature in April 2023 was partly attributed to the rise of misinformation and disinformation, as well as changing user preferences towards visual content.

Transition to Video Content

With the end of Instant Articles, many content creators in Cambodia shifted their focus to video content, utilizing Facebook’s in-stream ads and Reels. However, Meta’s stringent eligibility requirements for monetizing content through these features posed challenges. Creators had to be invited to join the program, comply with Meta’s Partner Monetisation Policies, and reside in eligible countries—criteria that excluded Cambodia. As a result, many Cambodian content creators managed their pages and financial transactions through foreign accounts.

YouTube’s Role in MMO

YouTube has also played a significant role in the MMO landscape in Cambodia. For years, Cambodian content creators faced limitations in monetizing their YouTube videos due to regional restrictions. However, in late November 2022, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications announced the formal launch of YouTube’s Partnership Programme in Cambodia. This initiative enabled local video content creators to earn money, marking a significant milestone in the history of MMO in the country.

The Technical Side of MMO

Behind the scenes, MMO involves a complex web of technical skills and tools. Technical teams often manage multiple social media accounts, using sophisticated software to automate actions such as liking, commenting, sharing, and increasing video views. These techniques, while effective in boosting engagement, also raise ethical concerns about the authenticity of the views and interactions.

Overcoming Monetization Barriers

Despite the challenges, Cambodian content creators have found innovative ways to overcome monetization barriers. Collaborating with individuals or groups with technical expertise, many creators produce and manage content that attracts viewers and adheres to monetization guidelines. This collaborative approach has been crucial in navigating the evolving landscape of social media monetization.

The Future of MMO in Cambodia

Looking ahead, the future of MMO in Cambodia appears promising. As global platforms continue to expand their monetization programs and update their policies, more opportunities are likely to open up for Cambodian content creators. Additionally, the increasing digital literacy and entrepreneurial spirit among Cambodians will continue to drive innovation and growth in this sector.

Conclusion

The history of making money online in Cambodia is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its people. From the early days of blogging and affiliate marketing to the current era of video content and social media monetization, Cambodian entrepreneurs have continuously adapted to the changing digital landscape. As they navigate the challenges and seize new opportunities, the future of MMO in Cambodia holds immense potential for growth and success.

PM Calls for Measures to Stimulate Tourism During Low Season

In a proactive response to concerns raised by the tourism sector regarding low international arrivals during the off-peak season, Prime Minister Hun Manet has proposed several measures to boost tourist numbers. Key among these proposals is reducing the cost of tickets to major attractions, including the iconic Angkor Wat, and halving parking fees at the newly opened Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI).

Addressing the Low Season Challenge

The Prime Minister’s call to action aims to mitigate the impact of the quieter months on Cambodia’s tourism industry. Despite significant strides in recovery, the sector still faces limitations during the low season. By reducing ticket prices and parking fees, the government hopes to make Cambodia a more attractive destination for international visitors during this period.

Tourism Statistics and Recovery

In the first half of 2024, Cambodia recorded 12,386 international flights, averaging 480 to 490 flights per week, facilitated by 31 airlines. The recently inaugurated SAI alone welcomed 3,214 flights, or approximately 120 to 130 flights weekly.

Siem Reap Provincial Governor Prak Sophoan highlighted the positive trends, noting, “Recently, the tourism industry has been recovering day-by-day. In 2023, Siem Reap province received over 2.5 million visitors, both local and international. In the first half of 2024, more than 1.9 million people visited Siem Reap, including over 520,000 international tourists. Daily, we now welcome 10 to 19 flights and 1,000 to 1,500 visitors at the airport.”

Sophoan also emphasized the collaborative efforts between government officials and stakeholders to create a calendar of annual events designed to attract more visitors, alongside improvements in hospitality for tourists.

National Tourism Figures

According to the Tourism Statistics Report of Cambodia, Phnom Penh International Airport received 8,960 flights in the first half of 2024, averaging 330 to 350 flights per week. Sihanoukville International Airport welcomed 212 flights, with seven flights weekly.

Tob Sopheak, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), confirmed that 3.16 million international tourists visited Cambodia during this period, a 22.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, and equivalent to 94.9 percent of the figures from the first half of 2019. Additionally, domestic tourism saw 9.69 million visitors, a 6.4 percent increase, while outbound tourists rose by five percent to 900,000.

The revenue from Angkor Wat ticket sales reached $24,357,695 from 521,950 visitors, marking a 35.3 percent increase.

Prime Minister’s Commitment to Tourism

During an undercover visit to Siem Reap, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed concern over the low tourist numbers during the off-peak season. He acknowledged Siem Reap’s vast potential to attract visitors and its critical role in driving economic development.

Manet stressed the importance of the tourism sector in creating employment and enhancing the country’s reputation. He attributed the sector’s challenges to global issues such as Covid-19 and international conflicts. The pandemic led to business closures and hardships for those in the tourism industry, and although Covid-19 has receded, ongoing global conflicts and economic crises continue to impact tourism.

To aid recovery, Manet emphasized the need for a safe and stable environment to attract tourists. He highlighted the government’s efforts, including spending $50 million to reactivate tourism activities and facilitate advancements across the country.

Seasonal Variations and Strategic Measures

Manet pointed out the stark difference in tourist arrivals between the high and low seasons. From October 2023 to March 2024, Cambodia saw 3,000 to 5,000 foreign visitors daily, compared to 1,300 to 1,900 during the low season from June onwards. He called for solutions to stabilize tourism throughout the year, including conducting studies on reducing airport parking prices and entry fees to major attractions during the low season.

“We should take problems as lessons learned and find solutions to address them. In this matter, we should also give some discounts during this low season, especially tickets for Angkor,” he stated.

Enhancing Visitor Convenience

The Prime Minister also mentioned initiatives to streamline the tourist experience, such as implementing e-arrivals and e-visa facilities, and enabling e-payment access upon arrival in Cambodia. These measures aim to save visitors time and reduce the hassle of obtaining official documents, making their stay more convenient and enjoyable.

Here’re Some of Angkor Times’ Mechanisms to Boost Tourism in Cambodia: A Strategic Approach

  1. Develop Long-Term Strategic Plans: Establish strategic plans for 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years to guide tourism development.
  2. Seek Partnerships: Collaborate with local and international partners for financing, budgeting, and educating tour operators to expand services across the country.
  3. Enhance Hospitality: Train tourism service providers to improve service quality, packaging, and pricing, ensuring a hygienic and attractive experience for tourists.
  4. Media Involvement: Encourage media participation in promoting Cambodian tourism.
  5. Embassy Participation: Involve Cambodian embassies in global tourism promotion campaigns.
  6. Educational Initiatives: Engage educational institutions in creating content and promoting tourism.
  7. Youth Involvement: Mobilize youth networks to create and share tourism-related content.
  8. Simplify Visa Processes: Implement policies to ease visa fees and streamline digital transportation and payment services for tourists.
  9. Environmental Stewardship: Encourage environmental conservation and active participation in promoting tourist sites.
  10. Influencer Partnerships: Collaborate with local and international influencers to promote Cambodia.
  11. Funding Initiatives: Seek stipends from business leaders to fund tourism promotion.

  13. Professional Development: Improve the capacity of tourism professionals and streamline operational efficiency.
  14. Combat Corruption: Eliminate corruption and favoritism within the Ministry of Tourism.
  15. Promote Khmer Cuisine: Widely promote famous Khmer foods.

By implementing these strategies, Cambodia can attract more tourists during the low season and strengthen its tourism industry, ensuring sustained economic growth and development.

Foreign Tourists will be able to make payments using Bakong App

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) is set to introduce the Bakong payment system tailored for tourists. This initiative aims to simplify financial transactions for visitors by allowing them to use digital payments instead of carrying physical dollar bills. This announcement was made by Ms. Chea Serey, the Governor-General of NBC, during the bank’s first half-year meeting on July 19, 2024.

“Soon we will launch Bakong for tourists,” Ms. Chea Serey stated, explaining that tourists visiting Cambodia can download the Bakong app to facilitate their transactions. Even without a local bank account, tourists can use their credit cards, such as Visa, MasterCard, or UnionPay, to pay for goods and services directly through the app.

The introduction of the Bakong system will streamline the payment process for tourists in Cambodia. This system will provide a new digital cash payment experience and address various challenges in the tourism sector. “This will address some of the challenges that our tourists, especially in Siem Reap, face in spending large amounts of dollars,” Ms. Chea Serey noted.

This initiative is in response to Prime Minister Hun Manet’s directive to review the problematic conditions related to the exchange of torn and dirty dollar bills. By launching the Bakong system, the NBC aims to enhance the tourism and hospitality experience in Cambodia. This is a challenge for us that needs to be addressed to facilitate the experience of our tourists in Cambodia.”

The NBC has developed a comprehensive payment system to make digital payments easier, more efficient, and faster, both for domestic and cross-border transactions, contributing to the development of Cambodia’s digital economy and society. Among all the payment systems, Bakong offers the most extensive range of functions, driving its growing usage and contributing to an improved financial environment and Cambodia’s international image.

Currently, the NBC has established cross-border payment agreements with Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and international company UnionPay. It is also expanding partnerships with regional countries and companies such as China, Japan, India, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Alipay.

The National Bank has established four emergency mechanisms to be implemented in Siem Reap:

1. The Siem Reap Commercial Bank branch is required to accept old or dirty US dollars from customers without any charge.

2. For very old dollar banknotes that should no longer circulate in the market, the commercial bank in Siem Reap will exchange them for new notes at the National Bank of Siem Reap branch at no cost, without needing to send them to the head office in Phnom Penh.

3. All banking and financial institutions in Siem Reap must place $20 and $50 US dollar banknotes in ATMs instead of $100 bills to facilitate tourist transactions. Deposits will still be accepted on deposit machines.

4. The National Bank will organize outreach programs for money changers, and hotel and restaurant owners to help them understand and support these measures, and to cooperate in implementing these mechanisms effectively.

In the past five months, Cambodia received over $2.9 million from international tourists, marking a 22.1 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. Thai tourists ranked first with 770,000 visitors, followed by 520,000 Vietnamese tourists and 320,000 Chinese tourists.

Specifically, Siem Reap welcomed more than 520,000 foreign tourists who purchased tickets to visit Angkor in the first half of 2024, generating over $24 million in revenue, a 36 percent increase from the same period in 2023.

Benefits of the Bakong System for Tourists:

  1. Convenient Digital Payments: Tourists can use the Bakong app for transactions, avoiding the hassle of carrying and exchanging physical dollar bills.
  2. International Credit Card Compatibility: The system supports Visa, MasterCard, and UnionPay, allowing tourists to use their home country credit cards easily.
  3. Enhanced Tourist Experience: Simplified payment processes improve the overall travel experience, especially in popular tourist destinations like Siem Reap.
  4. Addressing Payment Challenges: The system helps mitigate issues related to handling large amounts of cash and the exchange of damaged or dirty bills.
  5. Boosting Tourism and Hospitality: By improving payment infrastructure, Cambodia becomes a more attractive destination for international tourists.
  6. Promoting Digital Economy: The Bakong system contributes to the growth of Cambodia’s digital economy, enhancing its financial ecosystem.
  7. Cross-Border Payment Integration: The system supports seamless cross-border payments with various regional countries and international partners.
  8. Increased Revenue from Tourism: Easier payment methods can lead to increased spending by tourists, boosting the local economy.
  9. Improved Financial Image: The adoption of advanced payment systems enhances Cambodia’s reputation in the global financial market.
  10. Strategic Partnerships: Collaboration with international payment companies and regional partners strengthens Cambodia’s financial ties and infrastructure.

Latest Update on August 19, 2024

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) launched the Bakong Tourists mobile payment system on August 19, aimed at simplifying transactions for travelers, promoting the Cambodian riel, and enhancing the tourism sector. Key points from the article include:

  1. Launch and Functionality: The Bakong Tourists app, similar to the existing Bakong system, enables seamless, fee-free cross-bank payments, and is accessible via iOS and Android platforms. Tourists can spend up to $1,000 per day, or up to $3,000 after identity verification.
  2. Widespread Adoption: The app supports payments via QR codes at 3.3 million locations across Cambodia, providing greater convenience compared to traditional credit cards or ATMs.
  3. Collaborative Efforts: The NBC has partnered with banks, tourism operators, and immigration authorities to promote the app and ensure accessibility for tourists.
  4. User Experience: Tourists can add funds at banks, hotels, or via Visa cards in the future. They can withdraw remaining funds or donate to charity directly through the app.
  5. Regional Use: The app’s functionality extends beyond Cambodia, allowing use in neighboring countries like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
  6. Concerns and Feedback: Some tour guides and tourism professionals expressed concerns about the app’s ease of use, especially for older tourists, and emphasized the importance of promoting the use of the local currency, the riel.
  7. Support and Issue Resolution: A dedicated NBC team is available to address any payment issues that may arise, ensuring smooth transactions for users.

This innovative step by the NBC marks a significant move towards modernizing Cambodia’s payment systems and improving the tourism sector.
