The Vietnamese government has been studying the project to connect the railway from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh city very carefully and is working hard to expedite the project as soon as possible in the near future at the request of the Cambodian side. This was stated by Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport.
Senior Minister, Sun Chanthol made the remarks after a bilateral meeting on improving cross-border transportation between Cambodia and Vietnam via remote video on November 25, 2020.
Mr. Sun Chanthol said, “At the request of the Cambodian side regarding the project to connect the railway from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese side replied that it was studying the project very carefully and made efforts to expedite the project. “This will soon come to fruition in the near future.”
The meeting was held to discuss challenges and solutions related to traffic congestion at border crossings, aiming to improve cross-border trade between the two countries and increase trade volume.
The Minister stated that in order to solve the traffic congestion at the Bavet-Mokbai border gate, the two sides agreed to set up a working group and sub-working group on various tasks, including transportation by land, water and rail, to cooperate. Resolve issues in a timely and efficient manner, with the two countries’ working groups meeting regularly to discuss and make monthly reports to their respective prime ministers.
He stressed that improving transport infrastructure and border crossings not only serves trade between the two countries, but also trade with Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand, as well as ASEAN as a whole.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister also highlighted that Cambodia has been building, expanding and modernizing the transportation infrastructure system by land, sea and port to connect the main trade poles of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Border gates such as: National Road No. 1, Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, National Road No 33, Sihanoukville Road, and Siem Reap City Road to ensure a more efficient transportation chain.
