Government Moves to Reduce Pressure on Households

The Royal Government of Cambodia has stepped in to ease the rising cost of living by cutting additional taxes on gasoline and diesel, offering much needed relief to citizens facing higher global fuel prices. The decision, announced under the leadership of Hun Manet, reflects a proactive approach to support everyday livelihoods as energy costs continue to climb worldwide. By lowering the tax burden, the government aims to stabilize domestic fuel prices and reduce financial strain on families and businesses that rely heavily on transportation and logistics.

Hun Manet announces fuel tax cuts

Continued Subsidies and Price Support Measures

Alongside the tax reductions, the government will maintain its fuel subsidy of 6.5 US cents per litre, ensuring that consumers continue to benefit from direct price support. An additional reduction of 1 US cent per litre will also remain in place due to persistently high international oil prices, with gasoline exceeding 90 US dollars per barrel and diesel surpassing 100 US dollars per barrel. Import duties on fuel will continue to stay at zero, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to keeping fuel costs manageable during a volatile global energy market.

Significant Tax Cuts on Fuel Products

To strengthen these efforts, the government has taken further steps by reducing additional taxes on both gasoline and diesel to zero. The special tax on diesel has been cut from 4 percent to zero, while the value added tax on gasoline and diesel has been lowered from 10 percent to 4 percent, with the remaining 6 percent absorbed by the state. These measures represent a substantial fiscal intervention designed to cushion the impact of rising oil prices and maintain economic stability across key sectors.

Updated Fuel Prices Take Effect

Following the implementation of these policies, new fuel prices came into effect from March 20, 2026 and will remain in place until further notice. Regular gasoline is now priced at 5,400 Riel, approximately 1.35 US dollars per litre, while diesel stands at 6,700 Riel, or about 1.67 US dollars per litre. These adjusted prices reflect the combined impact of subsidies, tax reductions, and government intervention aimed at protecting consumers from global price fluctuations.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s decision to cut fuel taxes and maintain subsidies highlights a clear commitment to supporting its people during a period of rising global energy costs. By absorbing part of the tax burden and stabilizing fuel prices, the government is helping to ease daily expenses while safeguarding economic activity. As global oil markets remain unpredictable, these measures provide a crucial buffer that supports both households and businesses across the country.

AI Is Changing Jobs Faster Than Expected

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, concerns about job security are becoming more real for many people, especially younger generations. When asked whether AI is truly taking over human jobs, Bill Gates has been clear and direct in his response, saying that it is already happening. More companies are integrating AI into their daily operations, with some seeing it as a powerful breakthrough while others worry it could replace human roles. According to reports highlighted by Bloomberg, a study by Morgan Stanley suggests that job displacement linked to AI is already underway, reinforcing the urgency for workers to adapt.

Skills AI can't replace_ innovation and progress

Why Coding Still Needs Human Minds?

Despite rapid advancements in AI, coding remains one of the most valuable skills for the future. Bill Gates believes that while AI can assist in generating code, it still lacks the precision and deep understanding required to build complex systems. Human developers are essential for designing, reviewing, and refining software in ways that machines cannot fully replicate. Even the most advanced AI tools still rely on human guidance, creativity, and problem solving to function effectively. This makes coding not just a technical skill, but a strategic advantage in an AI driven world.

Biology Demands Creativity and Critical Thinking

Another field that stands out is biology, especially in areas related to medical and scientific research. This field requires a high level of creativity, analytical thinking, and real world judgment, qualities that AI struggles to match. Bill Gates points out that while AI can support research by processing data and identifying patterns, it cannot independently drive groundbreaking discoveries or form new scientific hypotheses. Human insight remains at the heart of innovation in biology, making it a field where talent and expertise will continue to be in high demand.

Energy Experts Will Shape the Future

The energy sector is another area where human expertise remains irreplaceable. It is a complex and large scale industry that requires careful decision making, especially when dealing with sustainability and global energy needs. Professionals in this field are responsible for solving critical challenges and balancing environmental concerns with economic demands. According to Bill Gates, AI can help improve efficiency and provide data analysis, but it cannot replace the human judgment needed to make high stakes decisions, particularly during crises or when managing national and global energy systems.

A Message to Gen Z About the Future

While Bill Gates acknowledges that no prediction about AI can be one hundred percent accurate, he remains confident that these three skill areas will continue to be essential. The future job market may evolve in unexpected ways, but the need for human creativity, critical thinking, and decision making will not disappear. For Gen Z, this is not just advice but a strategic direction. Learning these skills now could open doors to stable and meaningful careers in a rapidly changing world.

Conclusion

AI is transforming the way we work, but it is not replacing everything. Instead, it is reshaping the value of human skills. Coding, biology, and energy expertise stand out as areas where human intelligence still leads. As industries evolve, those who invest in these skills will be better prepared to navigate the future with confidence and relevance.

A New Step Toward Seamless Travel Payments

Cambodia has taken a major step in improving the travel experience by introducing a new tourist debit card in partnership with China, designed to make payments easier for visitors from both countries and beyond. Speaking at the official launch ceremony held at Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Tourism Minister Huot Hak highlighted the importance of this innovation, describing it as a practical solution that simplifies how travelers manage their expenses while exploring Cambodia. The initiative reflects a broader push to modernize the tourism sector and create a smoother, more convenient journey for international visitors.

Digital Payments Powering Tourism Growth

At the heart of this new system is a QR based payment solution that allows tourists to complete transactions quickly and efficiently without relying on cash. The launch event, organized by Bank of China Phnom Penh Branch, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Chinese Embassy and the National Bank of Cambodia. Minister Huot Hak emphasized that the service represents a meaningful milestone in advancing digital transformation across both tourism and finance sectors. The streamlined payment experience is expected to reduce friction for travelers while improving efficiency for local businesses, creating a more dynamic and competitive tourism environment.

Strengthening Cambodia China Partnership

The new debit card initiative also reflects the deepening cooperation between Cambodia and China under the so called Diamond Cooperation framework. Highlighting the broader vision behind the project, the minister stated, “Built on the win-win principle and focused on shared value, this initiative aims to help build a Cambodia-China community with a shared future,” Hak said. “It serves as a vital mechanism to further boost the momentum of the ‘Cambodia-China Tourism Year’ campaign.” This collaboration goes beyond convenience, reinforcing economic ties while encouraging more cross border travel and cultural exchange between the two nations.

Boosting Confidence for Tourists and Investors

Officials believe the introduction of digital payment solutions will play a key role in revitalizing Cambodia’s tourism sector, especially as the country prepares for increased international arrivals in the coming years. Experts suggest that digitising payment systems could enhance transaction efficiency for vendors by over 15% compared with traditional cash based methods. Minister Huot Hak also reassured visitors that the government, led by Hun Manet, remains committed to ensuring safety and security for both tourists and foreign investors. By combining advanced financial technology with a welcoming hospitality environment, Cambodia is positioning itself as an attractive destination for longer stays and repeat visits.

A Unique Event Meets Creative Opportunity

The Ministry of Tourism is turning one of Cambodia’s most breathtaking natural events into a creative opportunity for travelers and content creators. With the launch of a mobile video competition themed “Angkor Wonders,” the initiative invites the public to capture and share the magic of the Angkor Equinox in their own unique way. This rare phenomenon, where the sun rises perfectly aligned above the central tower of Angkor Wat, is more than just a visual spectacle. It reflects the advanced astronomical knowledge and spiritual beliefs of the ancient Khmer civilisation, drawing both local and international visitors year after year.

Angkor Equinox Video Contest

Capturing the Moment Through Your Lens

The competition is designed to be simple and accessible, requiring only a mobile phone and a creative eye. Participants are encouraged to film their own videos that showcase the beauty and atmosphere of the equinox. Each submission should run between one minute and thirty seconds to two minutes, offering enough time to tell a compelling visual story.

The event itself will take place from March 21 to 22, 2026, during the vernal equinox, with video submissions accepted shortly after. By opening the contest to everyone, the Ministry is creating a platform for authentic storytelling that highlights Cambodia’s cultural pride through modern digital expression.

Timing That Matters

The Angkor Equinox happens only twice a year, making it a rare and highly anticipated moment. The first occurrence falls between March 21 and 23, known as the vernal equinox, while the second takes place from September 21 to 23 during the autumnal equinox. These short windows add a sense of urgency and excitement, encouraging visitors to plan their trips carefully to witness and document the phenomenon. The contest aligns perfectly with this timing, giving participants a chance to capture a fleeting yet unforgettable experience.

Rewards That Inspire Participation

To make the competition even more appealing, the Ministry has introduced attractive prizes for the top five winners. The first place winner will receive 2 million Riel, followed by 1.5 million Riel for second place and 1 million Riel for third. Fourth and fifth place winners will take home 800,000 Riel and 600,000 Riel respectively. Beyond the financial rewards, participants also gain exposure and the opportunity to showcase their creativity on a national platform, making the experience valuable for both aspiring and experienced content creators.

Five Reasons You Should Join the Contest

Taking part in this competition is about more than just winning prizes.

First, it offers a rare chance to witness and document one of Cambodia’s most iconic natural events. Second, it allows participants to express creativity using just a smartphone, making it accessible to everyone.

Third, the contest provides a platform to gain recognition and share your work with a wider audience. Fourth, it encourages cultural appreciation by connecting participants with the history and meaning behind Angkor Wat.

Finally, it combines travel, storytelling, and competition into a memorable personal experience that goes beyond ordinary tourism.

Conclusion

The Angkor Equinox video contest is a smart blend of culture, creativity, and digital engagement. By inviting the public to participate, the Ministry of Tourism is not only promoting a unique natural phenomenon but also empowering individuals to tell their own stories about Cambodia. Whether you are a traveler, a content creator, or simply someone looking for a meaningful experience, this competition offers a compelling reason to be part of something truly special.
