Losing a vehicle’s number plate: Can I Request a New One?

Can I Request a New Number Plate if I Have Lost It?

Losing a vehicle’s number plate can be stressful, but in Cambodia, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) provides a straightforward process for requesting a replacement. Whether you’ve lost a standard or a personalized special number plate, you can get a new one by following specific steps and providing the required documents.

Here’s everything you need to know about replacing a lost Cambodian number plate, including the necessary documents, costs, and consultation services.

Can You Request a Replacement for a Lost Number Plate?

Yes, the MPWT allows you to request a new number plate if you lose the original. This includes both standard (capital-provincial) plates and personalized special number plates.

What Documents Are Required?

To apply for a replacement number plate, you will need to prepare the following documents:

  1. Khmer Identity Card
    • Provide a certified copy of your Khmer identity card, authorized by the competent authority.
  2. Application Form for Replacement of Vehicle Registration Plate
    • This form must include the vehicle’s actual chassis number and engine number for verification.
  3. Complaint Certified by the Administrative Police Station
    • File a report with your local administrative police station about the lost number plate and obtain a certified complaint letter.
  4. Certificate of Vehicle Technical Inspection (Check)
    • Ensure your vehicle has undergone the required technical inspection and attach a valid certificate to the application.

How Much Does It Cost?

The replacement fee depends on the type of number plate:

  • Standard (Capital-Provincial) Number Plate: 36,000 riel ($8.90)
  • Personalized Special Number Plate: 60,000 riel ($14.83)

These service fees are official and set by the MPWT. Ensure you make payments only through authorized channels to avoid scams.

Where Can You Apply?

Visit your nearest MPWT office to submit the required documents and pay the applicable fees. The staff will guide you through the application process and provide an estimated timeline for receiving the replacement plate.

Get Help Anytime: Free Hotline Service

If you have any questions or need guidance about the process, the MPWT offers a free consultation hotline at 1275. Friendly staff are ready to assist with any queries related to vehicle registration, technical inspections, or lost number plates.
