Why Is Cambodia Introducing a Visa-Free Trial for Chinese Travelers?

Cambodia Launches Trial Visa Exemption for Chinese Tourists.

Cambodia has taken another major step to strengthen tourism and economic ties with China by announcing a trial visa-exemption scheme specifically for Chinese citizens traveling from China. According to an official communication from the Council of Ministers, the Royal Government of Cambodia will allow Chinese nationals to enter the Kingdom without the need for a visa application or payment of visa fees during a special four-month period from June 15 to October 15, 2026. Under this scheme, eligible travelers can stay in Cambodia for up to 14 days per visit, providing greater convenience and reducing travel barriers for one of Cambodia’s largest tourism markets.

Simple Entry Procedure for Chinese Visitors

To ensure smooth implementation, the policy requires only one simple step: Chinese travelers must complete an E-arrival card upon entry. This streamlined process eliminates traditional paperwork and long processing times while preparing visitors for a digital-first travel experience. As stated in the official letter, “Chinese nationals will just have to fill an E-arrival card,” clearly indicating that the government aims to make the entry requirements as easy and traveler-friendly as possible, especially for short-term visitors.

Unlimited Entries Allowed During the Trial Period

Another noteworthy feature of the trial exemption is its flexibility. The Council of Ministers confirms that, “during the validity of the visa exemption, Chinese visitors can visit Cambodia as many times as they want.” This means frequent travelers such as business professionals, tourism promoters, investors, or short-stay vacationers can move in and out of Cambodia without restrictions, further boosting tourism circulation and supporting local businesses across major destinations like Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Siem Reap.

Cambodia Seeks Future Reciprocal Visa-Free Agreement

Recognizing the importance of balanced diplomatic ties, the Royal Government has also empowered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to negotiate with China on easing travel procedures for Cambodian citizens. This includes simplifying visa steps for Cambodians who want to visit China and exploring ways to create a permanent reciprocal visa exemption policy in the future. Such an agreement would enhance people-to-people exchanges, expand tourism flows, and encourage deeper cooperation between the two countries, aligning with Cambodia’s long-term tourism development strategy.
