Things to Do
Virachey National Park – The western end of this national park is accessible from Stung Treng at Siem Pang, a small town on the Tonle Kong. Kayaking & Boat trips in the Mekong – The intersections of rivers offer splendid places to go boating in the rivers. You can also go Kayaking to the north bordering Laos for spotting rare Irrawaddy dolphins. Boat trips take you through distant islands scattered in the basins comprising of fishing villages, palm trees, and mangrove forests. The boat trips cost about 15 USD per person and Kayaks can be rented for about 5 to 6 USD.
How to Reach Stung Treng
The nearest town to reach Stung Treng is to get to Kratie. There are regular buses available from all major cities like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kampot, Kep and Sihanoukville to Kratie.
From Kratie, it takes about 3 hours to reach there by minivans. It costs about 6 to 7 USD per person. The time to reach might increase during the rainy season.
What is the best time to visit Stung Treng?
The best time to visit Stung Treng is from December to March when the weather isn’t hot, and the humidity is manageable. The flooding of the rivers would have stopped, and it might be an ideal time to enjoy the beauty of green nature along the river.
Tips When Arriving in Stung Treng
There are just a couple of ATMs and cash is required for all transactions. It is suggested to carry enough money. Carry essential items like umbrellas, mosquito repellants, sunscreen and flip flops for spending time in Stung Treng. Book accommodations in advance if you plan to stay in the town overnight, as they are limited. There is no need to book any boat tours in advance.
