Solar Becomes Cambodia’s Primary Power Source: What Is Driving the Shift?

Cambodia has reached a major milestone in its clean energy journey as solar power officially becomes the country’s largest source of installed electricity generation capacity. Announced by Électricité du Cambodge during a press briefing in Phnom Penh, the achievement reflects years of investment in renewable energy, government support for green infrastructure, and growing confidence from development partners. With renewable sources now contributing 63 percent of Cambodia’s total installed power capacity, the Kingdom is emerging as one of the world’s leading providers of clean energy.

Clean energy in action

The transition is being driven by rapid solar expansion, new energy investments, and large scale renewable projects currently under construction. At the same time, Cambodia is strengthening its national power grid through battery storage technology and reducing its reliance on imported electricity. Together, these developments are positioning the country for a more sustainable and energy secure future.

Solar Power Becomes Cambodia’s Largest Energy Source

Solar energy now accounts for 30 percent of Cambodia’s total installed electricity generation capacity, making it the country’s primary power source for the first time. According to Électricité du Cambodge, Cambodia currently has approximately 6,300 megawatts of installed electricity capacity, with renewable energy contributing nearly 4,000 megawatts.

Speaking during a press conference in Phnom Penh, EDC Director General Praing Chulasa highlighted the significance of this achievement as the country continues expanding its clean energy portfolio.

“Renewable energy accounts for about 63 percent of our installed capacity, with solar now sitting at the 30 percent threshold.”

The latest figures demonstrate Cambodia’s growing commitment to renewable energy while supporting rising electricity demand through cleaner and more sustainable sources.

Years of Investment Are Driving Renewable Growth

Cambodia’s rapid progress in renewable energy is the result of coordinated government planning, supportive investment policies, and the construction of several large solar power projects across the country.

New investment approvals have accelerated the development of solar farms, allowing renewable energy to become an increasingly important pillar of the national electricity system. This strategy not only supports economic growth but also helps reduce carbon emissions while improving long term energy security.

“With 63 percent from renewable energy sources, Cambodia is considered one of the top countries in the world for clean energy supply,” he said.

The achievement places Cambodia among global leaders in renewable electricity generation and strengthens its reputation as a country committed to sustainable development.

Battery Storage Will Strengthen the National Grid

As solar generation continues expanding, Cambodia is also investing in modern technologies to ensure electricity remains reliable throughout the day and night. Because solar production depends on weather conditions and daylight, battery energy storage systems will play a critical role in balancing electricity supply.

To support this transition, Électricité du Cambodge is working closely with international development partners to introduce utility scale Battery Energy Storage Systems that can store renewable electricity and improve grid stability.

In June, the Asian Development Bank approved a financing package worth $63.44 million for Cambodia’s first utility scale battery energy storage project. The facility is expected to improve renewable energy integration, strengthen the national electricity network, and enhance regional power connectivity.

Cambodia Expands Green Infrastructure Nationwide

The country’s clean energy strategy extends beyond electricity generation. During the same press conference, officials announced a nationwide initiative to install high efficiency solar powered streetlights along more than 1,000 kilometers of roads across 13 provinces.

The project represents another step toward reducing dependence on conventional energy while improving public infrastructure and lowering long term operating costs. It also reflects Cambodia’s broader commitment to adopting environmentally friendly technologies in everyday public services.

As renewable projects continue expanding, Cambodia is steadily reducing its dependence on imported electricity while creating a more diversified and resilient energy system capable of supporting future economic growth.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s emergence of solar power as its largest electricity source marks an important turning point in the country’s energy transformation. Strong government policies, rising investment, and continued support from international development partners have accelerated the shift toward renewable energy. With clean energy already supplying nearly two thirds of the nation’s installed power capacity and new battery storage projects strengthening grid reliability, Cambodia is well positioned to become a regional leader in sustainable energy while supporting long term economic development.
