How Many Tourists Flocked to Cambodia for the Chinese-Vietnamese New Year Celebrations in 2024?

As the Lunar New Year festivities unfolded across Cambodia from February 9 to 12, 2024, the nation saw an unprecedented surge in tourism, with over 1 million visitors flocking to various destinations, according to a report from the Ministry of Tourism of Kingdom of Cambodia.

Among the throngs of tourists were Chinese Cambodians and Vietnamese Cambodians, who marked the Chinese-Vietnamese Lunar New Year with fervor and joy. This annual celebration, deeply rooted in tradition and culture, not only draws communities together but also attracts a significant number of visitors from both within and outside the country.

The report, released on February 12, revealed that a staggering 1,051,472 individuals ventured across Cambodia during the festive period. Of these, 993,991 were domestic tourists, showcasing a robust enthusiasm among locals to explore their homeland during this auspicious time. Additionally, 57,481 foreign tourists added to the vibrant tapestry of cultural exchange and celebration.

Destinations across Cambodia buzzed with activity as tourists poured in to experience the rich heritage and hospitality the country has to offer. Siem Reap province, home to the iconic Angkor Wat, welcomed 117,677 visitors eager to immerse themselves in ancient wonders. Meanwhile, Preah Sihanouk province, renowned for its pristine beaches, hosted a staggering 294,301 tourists seeking sun and relaxation.

The capital city of Phnom Penh, with its blend of history and modernity, saw a vibrant influx of 68,918 visitors, while Battambang province, with its quaint charm and cultural attractions, received 89,446 tourists. In Kampot province, known for its scenic landscapes and culinary delights, 64,528 tourists savored the local flavors and ambiance. Kandal province, with its cultural and historical significance, welcomed 71,273 visitors eager to delve into the country’s past.

Among the revelers were Cambodian Chinese and Vietnamese Cambodians, whose cultural heritage intertwines seamlessly with the fabric of Cambodian society. Their presence during the Lunar New Year celebrations adds a special vibrancy, as they share their traditions and customs with fellow Cambodians and visitors alike.

Speaking about the significance of the Lunar New Year celebrations, Chheng Sophea, a Chinese Cambodian residing in Phnom Penh, remarked, “The Lunar New Year is a time for family reunions, cultural festivities, and reflections on the past year. It’s heartwarming to see so many people coming together to celebrate and embrace our shared heritage.”

Echoing this sentiment, Nguyen Thanh, a Vietnamese Cambodian from Siem Reap, shared, “For Vietnamese Cambodians, the Lunar New Year holds deep cultural significance. It’s a time to honor our ancestors, uphold traditions, and foster unity within our community. Seeing the enthusiasm of both locals and tourists during this time is truly uplifting.”

As Cambodia continues to attract visitors from around the globe, events like the Chinese-Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration serve as a testament to the country’s rich cultural tapestry and its ability to bring people together in joyous celebration. With each passing year, these festivities not only showcase Cambodia’s cultural diversity but also reinforce its position as a premier destination for cultural tourism in the region.
