Retail Credit Growth: A Mixed Picture

The second quarter of 2024 brought mixed results for Cambodia’s credit market. According to CBC’s latest reports, retail credit exhibited positive growth despite some underlying concerns.

  • Retail Loan Accounts Increase: The total number of retail loan accounts rose by 4.75%, reaching approximately 1.92 million by the end of June 2024. The outstanding balance of retail loans also saw a modest increase of 0.67%, totaling $15.31 billion.
  • Mortgage and Credit Card Growth: The primary drivers of this growth were mortgage and credit card applications, which surged by 17% and 15%, respectively, from the previous quarter. However, personal finance applications saw a slight decline of 2%.
  • Loan Quality Concerns: Despite the overall growth, there was a slight deterioration in the quality of retail loans. The ratio of loans 30 days or more past due (30+ DPD) increased from 6.03% in the first quarter to 6.22% in the second quarter, signaling a rise in overdue payments.

CBC’s CEO, Oeur Sothearoath, commented on the mixed outcomes, noting that while there was a positive trend in retail credit performance, the demand for retail credit decreased in terms of the number and amount of applications.

Small Business Lending: A Declining Trend

In stark contrast to the retail sector, small business lending experienced a noticeable decline in the second quarter of 2024.

  • Decline in Loan Accounts: The number of small business loan accounts fell by 1.7%, bringing the total number to around 1.86 million. The overall loan balance barely increased, with only a 0.1% rise, reaching $34.22 billion.
  • Decrease in Credit Applications: There was a significant drop in small business credit applications across key sectors, including working capital, asset finance, and construction loans. Applications for working capital fell by 11%, asset finance by 9%, and construction loans by 14.2%. The only positive note was a 2.7% increase in agriculture credit applications.
  • Deterioration in Loan Quality: Similar to the retail sector, the quality of small business loans showed signs of strain. The 30+ DPD ratio for small business loans increased from 7.8% in the first quarter to 8.3% in the second quarter. The construction sector was particularly hard hit, with a 15.3% 30+ DPD ratio, indicating increased credit risk.

Regional Variations: Retail vs. Small Business Credit

The CBC reports also highlighted significant regional differences in credit performance:

  • Retail Credit: The plateau region saw the highest increase in credit card applications at 46%, while the coastal region led in mortgage applications with a 29% rise. The Tonle Sap area also showed positive growth in retail loan balances with a 2.5% increase.
  • Small Business Credit: The plateau region experienced the most substantial decrease in construction loan applications, which plummeted by 65.5%.

Key Takeaways

The credit landscape in Cambodia is showing diverse trends across sectors and regions. While retail credit is growing, driven by mortgages and credit card applications, the small business lending market is facing challenges with declining loan accounts and deteriorating loan quality. Regional variations further complicate the overall picture, suggesting that local economic conditions play a significant role in shaping credit trends.

Other major French publications like Diverto, 20 Minutes, CNews, and Le Figaro echoed similar sentiments, enticing their readers with stories about VannDa. His popularity extends far beyond Cambodia, with over 4 million views on YouTube for his works. Le Parisien highlighted VannDa’s influence in Southeast Asia and his burgeoning international presence.

In a nod to his significance in Cambodian culture, Le Parisien also referred to VannDa as a “Symbol of Khmer Culture.” The article highlighted the massive success of “Time to Rise,” which has garnered 123 million views on YouTube in just three years. The music video is particularly noted for blending traditional Khmer music, featuring the classical chapei dong veng, with modern rap, creating a powerful fusion of old and new.

A Story of Cultural Pride

Despite being relatively unknown to the French public, VannDa’s presence at the event was celebrated in Cambodia. Diverto’s news editor, Elodie Falco, provided deeper insights into VannDa’s journey, from his roots in Sihanoukville to his move to Phnom Penh to pursue his musical ambitions. VannDa joined Barmi Productions in 2018, where his career began to flourish.

Diverto also featured a link to a Radio France article titled “VannDa, Cambodia’s Leading Rapper,” published in November 2022. This article chronicled VannDa’s rise since 2020, highlighting hits like “J+0,” “Hot Boy,” “Catch Me if You Can,” “Bong,” “Run the Town,” and, of course, “Time to Rise.”

Collaborating with Global Artists

The BFM website pointed out VannDa’s strength in collaborating with international artists, which has only enhanced his appeal. BFM also quoted an interview VannDa did with VICE in July 2022, where he discussed his decision to follow his artistic dreams, despite his family’s wishes for him to pursue a career as a lawyer or doctor.

A Humble Beginning

Le Figaro delved into VannDa’s humble beginnings, tracing his journey from a family selling coconuts to becoming a famous singer across Southeast Asia. His songs, performed in both English and Khmer, have resonated widely, making him a symbol of Cambodian pride.

Similarly, CNews described VannDa as representing a new generation of Cambodian artists. He was the first to perform at the Sabadaidee Fest Southeast Asian Music and Culture Festival in Chino, California, in mid-June.

A Rising Star

In a country of approximately 16 million people, VannDa has amassed more than 4.4 million YouTube followers. His appearance at the Stade de France, even if brief, in traditional Khmer attire, has significantly boosted his profile. As 20 Minutes noted, “With just 20 seconds on the Stade de France stage, VannDa’s support base continues to grow rapidly.”

Paris Match also chimed in, noting the surprise invitation extended to VannDa for the Olympics’ closing ceremony. The magazine linked VannDa’s rising star to his association with Phoenix, hinting that while he might not have been widely known at the event, he has the potential to become one of the most popular global stars.

Phoenix: A Major Highlight of the Olympics

Phoenix, a French rock band originating from Versailles, has been in the music industry for over 25 years. With seven albums and more than 70 songs, they’ve won significant awards, including a Grammy in 2010 and the Victoires de la Musique in 2014.

Phoenix is set to be the main act at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympics, where they performed their hit single “Lisztomania” alongside Belgian singer Angèle, captivating the global audience.

VannDa: A Symbol of Cambodia’s Cultural Renaissance

As VannDa’s fame continues to grow, he stands as a symbol of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage, merging traditional elements with contemporary sounds. His journey from the streets of Sihanoukville to the grand stage of the Stade de France is a testament to his talent and determination. It’s no surprise that French newspapers and international media are introducing him to the world, marking the beginning of what could be a global career.

The Rise of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Cambodia: A Testament to Economic Confidence and Growth

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has emerged as a critical pillar supporting Cambodia’s economic development over the past few decades. The recent surge in FDI flows into the Kingdom not only underscores the confidence that foreign investors have in Cambodia’s economic potential but also reflects the nation’s strides in creating an inviting investment climate. This blog post delves into the factors contributing to the FDI influx, the historical context of FDI in Cambodia, and the implications of this trend for the nation’s future growth.

What are the trends in Cambodia’s FDI over recent years?

Historical Context of Foreign Direct Investment in Cambodia

Foreign Direct Investment in Cambodia has a storied history that reflects the country’s economic journey. In the early 1990s, following decades of conflict and isolation, Cambodia opened its doors to the global economy. The country’s shift towards a market-oriented economy, coupled with efforts to stabilize the political landscape, marked the beginning of its FDI journey.

During this period, FDI was initially slow to gain traction due to the nation’s nascent regulatory framework and infrastructure challenges. However, as the government embarked on a series of economic reforms and introduced policies to attract foreign capital, FDI began to pick up. The establishment of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) in 1994 was a significant milestone, as it became the key agency responsible for promoting and facilitating FDI.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cambodia witnessed a gradual increase in FDI inflows, driven by the liberalization of trade and investment policies. Key sectors that attracted investment included garments, agriculture, and tourism. The garment industry, in particular, became a major recipient of FDI, bolstered by favorable trade agreements such as the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) with the United States and the European Union.

Factors Driving the Recent Surge in FDI

Fast forward to the present day, and Cambodia is experiencing an unprecedented surge in FDI. According to Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), the country registered 237 investment projects worth over $6 billion in the first eleven months of the new government’s mandate from August 2023 to July 2024. This influx of foreign capital highlights the growing confidence of international investors in Cambodia’s economic prospects.

Several factors contribute to this positive trend:

  1. Political Stability and Peace: Cambodia’s enduring peace and political stability have created a conducive environment for investment. Investors are naturally drawn to countries where the risk of political upheaval is low, and Cambodia’s stable government has been a significant factor in its ability to attract FDI.
  2. Economic Growth and Stability: Over the past two decades, Cambodia has enjoyed robust economic growth, characterized by macroeconomic stability, controlled inflation, and a stable exchange rate. These factors have helped build investor confidence and make Cambodia an attractive destination for FDI.
  3. Improved Investment Climate: The Cambodian government has made concerted efforts to improve the investment climate by introducing a new Investment Law and enhancing regulatory frameworks. These measures aim to make it easier for foreign investors to do business in the country, providing incentives such as tax holidays and streamlined investment procedures.
  4. Strategic Geographical Location: Cambodia’s strategic location in Southeast Asia, bordering key markets like Thailand and Vietnam, makes it an attractive hub for investors looking to tap into the broader ASEAN region. The country’s access to major shipping routes also facilitates trade and export-oriented investments.
  5. Free Trade Agreements: The implementation of free trade agreements (FTAs) with various countries has further bolstered Cambodia’s attractiveness to foreign investors. These agreements provide preferential access to key markets, enhancing the competitiveness of Cambodian exports and encouraging investment in sectors like manufacturing.

Key Sectors Attracting Foreign Investment

The recent FDI surge has been particularly pronounced in certain sectors, reflecting Cambodia’s evolving economic landscape. According to CDC reports, the manufacturing sector has been the primary beneficiary of FDI, with both garment and non-garment industries receiving significant investments.

1. Garment and Footwear Industry

The garment, footwear, and travel goods industry remains Cambodia’s largest foreign exchange earner and continues to attract substantial FDI. The industry’s growth has been fueled by favorable trade agreements and competitive labor costs. Major global brands have established manufacturing facilities in Cambodia, leveraging its strategic location and efficient supply chain networks.

2. Non-Garment Manufacturing

In addition to garments, Cambodia is witnessing a diversification of its manufacturing sector, with investments flowing into industries such as electronic components, bicycles, auto parts, furniture, leather, and plastic products. This diversification is essential for reducing the country’s reliance on a single industry and creating a more resilient economy.

3. Agriculture and Agro-Processing

Agriculture has traditionally been a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economy, and it continues to attract FDI, particularly in agro-processing industries. Investors are drawn to Cambodia’s fertile land and favorable climate, which support the cultivation of a wide range of crops. The government’s focus on developing value-added agricultural products is also attracting interest from foreign investors.

4. Tourism and Hospitality

Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage, exemplified by the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex, has made it a popular tourist destination. The tourism and hospitality sector has attracted significant FDI, with investments in hotels, resorts, and related infrastructure. The government’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism and enhance connectivity have further boosted investor confidence in this sector.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects

The Cambodian government’s proactive approach to attracting FDI is evident in its ongoing efforts to engage with international investors. In the coming months, a CDC delegation is set to visit China, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East to promote investment opportunities in Cambodia. This outreach is expected to attract even more investors from these regions, further boosting FDI inflows.

Looking ahead, Cambodia’s FDI landscape is likely to be shaped by several emerging trends:

  1. Digital Transformation and Technology Investments

As Cambodia embraces the digital age, there is growing interest in investments related to technology and digital infrastructure. The government’s commitment to fostering a digital economy, coupled with the country’s young and tech-savvy population, presents significant opportunities for FDI in the technology sector.

  1. Sustainable and Green Investments

With global emphasis on sustainability, there is increasing interest in green investments in Cambodia. The country’s abundant natural resources and commitment to environmental protection make it an attractive destination for investors focused on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly projects.

  1. Infrastructure Development

Cambodia’s ambitious infrastructure development plans, including the construction of the Funan Techo Canal (FTC) and various road and bridge projects, are expected to attract substantial FDI. These infrastructure investments are crucial for enhancing connectivity, reducing logistical costs, and supporting the growth of key industries.

FDI Trends from 2019 to 2024: A Snapshot

To understand the trajectory of FDI in Cambodia, it’s essential to look at the data from recent years. Between 2019 and 2024, Cambodia experienced a steady increase in FDI inflows, with a notable surge in 2023 and 2024. Here’s a snapshot of investment projects during this period:

  • 2019: 222 projects with an investment value of $4.2 billion
  • 2020: 238 projects with an investment value of $4.7 billion
  • 2021: 276 projects with an investment value of $5.3 billion
  • 2022: 294 projects with an investment value of $5.8 billion
  • 2023: 317 projects with an investment value of $6.1 billion
  • 2024: (up to July) 237 projects with an investment value exceeding $6 billion

This upward trend underscores the growing confidence of foreign investors in Cambodia’s economy, driven by favorable investment policies, a stable macroeconomic environment, and the country’s strategic location.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for FDI in Cambodia

Cambodia’s journey with Foreign Direct Investment is a testament to the country’s resilience, adaptability, and potential for future growth. The recent surge in FDI inflows reflects the confidence of international investors in the Kingdom’s economic prospects and its commitment to creating a conducive environment for business.

As Cambodia continues to implement reforms, enhance its infrastructure, and engage with global investors, the future of FDI looks promising. The influx of foreign capital will play a crucial role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving the standard of living for Cambodians.

However, the success of FDI in Cambodia will depend on the continued commitment of the government to maintain political stability, enhance the investment climate, and address challenges such as infrastructure gaps and skill shortages.

As of 2024, LinkedIn has approximately 200,000 users in Cambodia, a modest figure compared to the millions who use platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Telegram. While LinkedIn is globally recognized as the premier social networking site for professionals, it has yet to achieve widespread popularity in Cambodia. Understanding why LinkedIn lags behind other social media platforms in Cambodia requires delving into the unique sociocultural and economic factors that shape digital habits in the country. In this article, we will explore four key reasons why LinkedIn is not popular in Cambodia, despite its international reputation as a hub for professional networking and career development.

Linkedin in Cambodia
Linkedin in Cambodia

1. Language Barrier: Limited English Proficiency

LinkedIn primarily operates in English, which poses a significant barrier to its widespread adoption in Cambodia. The majority of the Cambodian population speaks Khmer as their first language, and while English is taught in schools and used in business, it is not as widely spoken or understood as in other countries where LinkedIn is more popular.

In Cambodia, English proficiency is largely concentrated in urban areas and among the younger, more educated demographic. Even within this group, the level of fluency varies significantly. For many Cambodians, especially those in rural areas, English remains a foreign language that they are not comfortable using for professional purposes. This language barrier means that the vast majority of Cambodians do not find LinkedIn accessible or relevant to their daily lives.

The linguistic challenges extend beyond simple comprehension. LinkedIn’s interface, its content, and even the interactions between users are predominantly in English. For a platform whose primary purpose is to facilitate professional networking, this creates a significant hurdle for those who are not fluent in the language. As a result, many Cambodians may feel alienated or intimidated by the platform, preferring to use social media networks that are available in Khmer and are more aligned with their language skills and cultural context.

2. Professional Focus: A Platform for the Skilled and Educated

LinkedIn is designed as a platform for professionals to connect, network, and explore career opportunities. This focus inherently limits its appeal to a specific segment of the population—those with professional skills and education, often with a strong command of English. In Cambodia, the majority of the workforce is employed in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and manufacturing, where formal professional networking is less common and often unnecessary.

The Cambodian economy is still developing, with a large portion of the population engaged in informal or subsistence-level work. For these individuals, LinkedIn offers little value as they are not seeking the type of professional connections or job opportunities that the platform excels in facilitating. Even among those who work in more formal sectors, the use of LinkedIn is often limited to higher-level employees, such as managers, executives, and those in multinational corporations or international organizations.

Moreover, the platform’s focus on showcasing professional achievements, skills endorsements, and career milestones can be intimidating for those who do not have extensive professional experience or higher education. Many Cambodian users may feel that they do not have enough to showcase on LinkedIn, further discouraging them from using the platform. In contrast, other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram allow users to share a broader range of content, from personal photos to daily life updates, making them more inclusive and appealing to a wider audience.

3. Lack of Marketplace Features: Limited Business Use

Another major factor contributing to LinkedIn’s limited popularity in Cambodia is its lack of marketplace features. While LinkedIn excels in providing a platform for networking and career development, it does not cater to the direct buying and selling of products, which is a significant aspect of social media use in Cambodia. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram are widely used by Cambodian businesses and entrepreneurs to promote and sell products, often through informal channels like Facebook Marketplace or Instagram shops.

In Cambodia, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) rely on social media to reach customers and grow their businesses. The ease with which users can set up online shops, advertise products, and directly interact with customers on platforms like Facebook makes them far more attractive for business purposes than LinkedIn. The absence of similar functionalities on LinkedIn means that it is not perceived as a viable tool for commerce, which diminishes its appeal to a large segment of the population that is more focused on entrepreneurship and trading rather than formal career networking.

Additionally, the business environment in Cambodia is heavily relationship-based, with personal connections playing a crucial role in business dealings. Platforms like Facebook, which allow for a mix of personal and professional interactions, are more in line with how business is conducted in the country. LinkedIn’s more formal and professional tone does not resonate as well in this context, further limiting its use among Cambodian businesspeople.

4. Social Media Preferences: The Dominance of Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, and Instagram

The Cambodian social media landscape is dominated by platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, and Instagram, which cater to a wide range of social interactions, entertainment, and communication needs. These platforms are deeply embedded in the daily lives of Cambodians, offering everything from news updates and entertainment to personal communication and community building.

Facebook, in particular, is ubiquitous in Cambodia, with millions of users across the country. It serves as a one-stop platform for communication, information sharing, entertainment, and even business transactions. The platform’s ability to integrate various aspects of online life, including its support for Khmer language, has made it the preferred social media platform for Cambodians.

TikTok and Instagram are popular among younger Cambodians for their entertainment value and the ability to share short-form videos and photos. These platforms allow users to engage in creative expression, follow trends, and stay connected with friends and influencers. Telegram, on the other hand, is widely used for secure messaging and group communication, often in professional and community settings.

In contrast, LinkedIn’s focus on professional networking and its more formal tone do not align with the social media habits of most Cambodians. The platform’s features are not as engaging or entertaining, and its user base in Cambodia is relatively small, creating a network effect where fewer users lead to less content and engagement, making it less attractive for new users to join.

The dominance of other social media platforms in Cambodia also means that LinkedIn has to compete for the limited time and attention that users can allocate to social media. Given that Facebook and other platforms already fulfill most of the communication, networking, and entertainment needs of Cambodians, there is little incentive for them to adopt LinkedIn, which they may perceive as redundant or unnecessary.

Conclusion

LinkedIn’s lack of popularity in Cambodia can be attributed to a combination of factors, including language barriers, its focus on professional networking, the absence of marketplace features, and the dominance of other social media platforms that are better aligned with Cambodian digital habits. While LinkedIn remains a valuable tool for professionals globally, it has yet to find its footing in Cambodia, where social media is primarily used for communication, entertainment, and commerce rather than formal professional networking.

As Cambodia continues to develop economically and more Cambodians gain access to higher education and English proficiency, there may be potential for LinkedIn to grow its user base in the future. However, for now, the platform’s niche appeal means that it will likely remain underutilized in comparison to more versatile and widely used platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

What do you think? Do you agree with these reasons, or do you see other factors at play? Share your thoughts on why LinkedIn is not as popular in Cambodia. Your insights could help shape a deeper understanding of social media trends in the country.

Why the Value of Oknha Status is in Decline in Cambodia?

The recent string of arrests involving individuals holding the title of “Oknha (Tycoon)” in Cambodia has cast a shadow over the prestige and perceived value of this honorific title. Once considered a symbol of respect, power, and contribution to society, the title of Oknha is now increasingly seen as tarnished due to the questionable actions of some of its bearers. This blog post explores the top five reasons why the value of Oknha status is on the decline in Cambodia.

Cambodian Okhna Association
Cambodian Okhna Association

1. Questionable Behavior and Criminal Activities

The Oknha title was traditionally awarded to individuals who made significant contributions to the development of Cambodia, often through philanthropy, business leadership, or other forms of civic engagement. However, recent incidents involving Oknhas engaging in illegal or unethical activities have severely impacted the title’s reputation.

One of the most notable cases is that of Khon Pachhasith, an Oknha who was recently arrested after firing guns inside a nightclub in Phnom Penh. His reckless behavior, which endangered the lives of innocent bystanders, not only led to his arrest but also resulted in the revocation of his Oknha status by royal decree. Such incidents raise serious concerns about the character and integrity of those being granted this prestigious title.

When individuals who are supposed to be role models for society engage in criminal activities, it undermines the very essence of the Oknha title. This growing trend has led to public skepticism about the process of conferring the title and whether it truly reflects the virtues it is supposed to represent.

2. Perceived Irregularities in the Title Conferment Process

The process of obtaining the Oknha title has also come under scrutiny. Traditionally, the title was reserved for those who made significant contributions to the nation, often through substantial charitable donations or other forms of civic service. However, in recent years, there have been growing concerns about the transparency and fairness of this process.

Critics argue that the title has increasingly become a status symbol for the wealthy elite rather than a recognition of genuine contributions to society. The requirement to pay hefty fees to maintain membership in the Cambodian Oknha Association—ranging from $3,000 to over $100,000—has led to accusations that the title can be “bought” rather than earned through merit.

This perception of irregularities and favoritism in the title conferment process has eroded the public’s trust in the value of the Oknha status. It has also sparked debate over whether the title still holds the same prestige and meaning as it once did.

3. Increasing Number of Oknha Titles Diluting Its Prestige

The sheer number of individuals holding the Oknha title today is another factor contributing to its declining value. According to the Cambodian Oknha Association, which was founded in October 2022, there are now over 1,000 members. While this increase in numbers could be seen as a sign of growing wealth and prosperity in the country, it also raises concerns about the dilution of the title’s prestige.

In the past, the title of Oknha was rare and bestowed only upon those who had demonstrated exceptional contributions to the nation. The rapid increase in the number of titleholders, however, has led to a situation where the title is no longer seen as exclusive or prestigious. Instead, it is increasingly viewed as a common accolade that can be easily obtained by those with enough financial resources.

This oversaturation of the title has led to a devaluation in the eyes of the public, who now question whether the title still holds any significant meaning or distinction.

4. Public Perception of Elitism and Disconnect from Ordinary Citizens

The growing perception that the Oknha title is reserved for the wealthy elite has also contributed to its declining value. Many Cambodians now view the titleholders as part of an exclusive club that is disconnected from the realities of ordinary citizens. This perception is further fueled by the lavish lifestyles and ostentatious displays of wealth by some Oknhas, which stand in stark contrast to the daily struggles faced by many Cambodians.

The recent incidents involving Oknhas engaging in criminal activities or unethical behavior have only reinforced this perception of elitism and entitlement. For example, the case of Khon Pachhasith, who flaunted his wealth and power by firing guns in a public venue, highlights the disconnect between the behavior of some Oknhas and the values of humility, service, and responsibility that the title is supposed to embody.

This growing sense of disillusionment among the public has led to a decline in the respect and admiration once associated with the Oknha title.

5. Erosion of the Title’s Symbolic Meaning and Cultural Significance

Finally, the declining value of the Oknha title can be attributed to the erosion of its symbolic meaning and cultural significance. Traditionally, the title was not only a mark of personal achievement but also a symbol of the individual’s commitment to the betterment of Cambodian society. It was a recognition of the individual’s role as a leader, a role model, and a contributor to the nation’s development.

However, as the title has become more accessible to those with financial means, its symbolic meaning has been increasingly overshadowed by its association with wealth and status. The recent incidents involving Oknhas behaving in ways that are contrary to the values the title is supposed to represent have further eroded its cultural significance.

As a result, the Oknha title is no longer seen as a badge of honor or a symbol of societal contribution. Instead, it is often viewed with skepticism and cynicism, as a marker of wealth and privilege rather than one of service and responsibility.

Conclusion

The decline in the value of the Oknha title in Cambodia can be attributed to a combination of factors, including questionable behavior by titleholders, perceived irregularities in the title conferment process, an increasing number of titleholders diluting its prestige, public perception of elitism, and the erosion of the title’s symbolic meaning.

As more incidents come to light involving Oknhas engaging in criminal or unethical activities, the public’s trust in the title and its significance continues to wane. To restore the prestige and value of the Oknha status, it is essential for the title conferment process to be made more transparent and for the actions of titleholders to be more closely aligned with the values of service, responsibility, and contribution to society.

For Cambodia to regain faith in the honorific title, it is crucial for both the government and the Cambodian Oknha Association to take steps to ensure that the title remains a symbol of genuine achievement and societal contribution. Only by doing so can the Oknha title reclaim its status as a mark of respect and honor in Cambodian society.

Imagine a Cambodia where every child and youth has a book in their hands, discovering new worlds and learning valuable life lessons. This is the vision of the One Book, One Community campaign, a national literacy initiative that aims to make reading an integral part of every community across the country.

One Book, One Community
One Book, One Community

Launched on August 10, this ambitious campaign will tour 25 provinces and the capital over 25 days, ending on September 10. The goal? To spark a love for reading by donating 2,500 books to libraries, schools, and community centers nationwide.

Why This Campaign Matters?

In today’s digital age, where social media and smartphones dominate our attention, reading can sometimes take a backseat. This campaign is a timely reminder of the importance of books and literacy, especially for the younger generation.

Heang Vattey, co-founder of the One Book, One Community campaign, passionately believes in the power of books to transform lives. She explains that the campaign is not just about giving away books; it’s about inspiring children and youth to embrace reading as a lifelong habit.

“We want to change youths who are addicted to social media so that instead they are reading a book in their hands. We want to strengthen literacy throughout the country,” she says.

Books for Every Interest

The books being donated cover a wide range of genres and topics. Whether it’s educational materials, leadership guides, life skills books, or entertaining novels and fairy tales, there’s something for everyone. Vattey encourages young readers to explore different types of books in both Khmer and English, emphasizing that each book offers unique benefits.

“The more they read, the more they know. When they read more books they will learn how to be independent as well,” she adds.

The Impact of the Campaign

Already, the campaign is making waves in communities. Thorn Samang, a 12-year-old student from Thmorkho Primary School in Kampong Cham, shared his excitement about the campaign’s arrival in his community. He believes that events like this, which provide access to books, are crucial in reminding kids about the joys of reading.

“When there are many activities that provide access to books, like book fairs, it will remind kids to read more. Some kids are addicted to their phones and they forget to read any books at all. It will urge them to love books and love reading,” he says.

Join the Movement

The One Book, One Community campaign is more than just a book donation drive; it’s a movement to cultivate a culture of reading in Cambodia. By putting books into the hands of children and youths, this campaign is laying the foundation for a more educated, independent, and curious generation.

We invite you to be part of this movement! Whether you’re a student, teacher, parent, or simply someone who loves books, your involvement can make a difference. Share your thoughts on the importance of reading, join local events, and most importantly, encourage the young people in your life to pick up a book and explore the world through its pages.

Let’s work together to build a community where every child grows up with a love for reading. What are your thoughts on this campaign? How can we further promote literacy in our communities? Share your ideas and let’s inspire others to join the cause!

His journey to becoming one of Cambodia’s most powerful businessmen is marked by resilience, adaptability, and a keen sense of opportunity.

Kit Meng’s family fled Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime, which led them to Australia where they settled as refugees. Growing up in a new country, Kit Meng faced the challenges of adaptation and survival in a foreign land. His experiences during these formative years instilled in him a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Education and Early Career

In Australia, Kit Meng pursued higher education and earned a degree in commerce. His education provided him with a solid foundation in business principles, which he would later apply in his ventures back in Cambodia. After completing his studies, he worked in Australia for a brief period, gaining valuable experience in the corporate world.

The Meng family returned to Cambodia in the early 1990s after the country began to stabilize following decades of conflict. Recognizing the untapped potential in the Cambodian market, Kit Meng decided to invest his efforts in rebuilding the family business, starting with a modest import-export operation.

Building a Business Empire

Kit Meng’s business acumen quickly became evident as he expanded his operations into various sectors. In 1994, he founded the Royal Group of Companies, which would eventually become one of the largest and most diversified conglomerates in Cambodia. Under his leadership, the Royal Group ventured into telecommunications, finance, media, hospitality, and real estate.

Telecommunications: A Cornerstone of Success

One of Kit Meng’s most significant achievements was his role in revolutionizing Cambodia’s telecommunications industry. In 1997, the Royal Group partnered with Millicom International Cellular to launch Mobitel (later rebranded as Cellcard), Cambodia’s first mobile phone operator. This venture was a game-changer, bringing mobile communication to a country where the infrastructure was still developing.

Cellcard rapidly grew to become one of Cambodia’s leading mobile operators, capturing a significant market share and setting the stage for the country’s digital transformation. Kit Meng’s ventures in hospitality and real estate also flourished. The Royal Group developed some of Cambodia’s most prestigious properties, including the luxurious Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel and the iconic Royal Railway Hotel. These developments not only enhanced Cambodia’s tourism sector but also contributed to the country’s image as an emerging destination for business and leisure.

Philanthropy and Contributions to Cambodia’s Development

While Kit Meng is known for his business achievements, he is also recognized for his contributions to Cambodia’s development through philanthropy. He has supported various social and educational initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Cambodians. Kit Meng is married and has children, and he continues to reside in Cambodia, where he remains actively involved in his business ventures.

Kit Meng’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and visionary leadership. His ability to navigate the complexities of a post-conflict economy and transform challenges into opportunities has made him a key figure in Cambodia’s economic landscape.
