Visiting Song Saa Island: The Full Story of a Barefoot Luxury Paradise

When it comes to secluded luxury retreats, few can rival the charm and sustainability of Song Saa Private Island. Tucked away in Cambodia’s Koh Rong archipelago, this resort is more than a destination—it’s a testament to regenerative tourism and environmental stewardship. But what makes this island so special? Why is it considered a must-visit? Who is behind its transformation? And how can you make the most of your visit?

This comprehensive guide delves into the story of Song Saa, its founder’s vision, the activities it offers, and practical tips for planning your trip.

The Founder’s Story: A Vision of Regeneration

In 2004, Greek-Australian hotelier Melita Koulmandas stumbled upon two small islands—Koh Ouen and Koh Bong—during a trip to Cambodia’s Koh Rong archipelago. What began as a serendipitous encounter turned into an extraordinary journey of transformation.

The Spark
Exploring the archipelago on a rented fishing boat, Melita was approached by a local fisherman who lived on one of the islands. Struggling with overfishing and dwindling resources, he offered to sell the island for USD 15,000. Inspired by the untouched beauty and the potential for change, Melita made the purchase, marking the beginning of Song Saa’s story.

Regeneration Before Development
The islands were in disrepair—littered with trash, with a dying reef system. Recognizing the ecological fragility, Melita initiated a large-scale clean-up and worked with local communities to establish Cambodia’s first protected marine reserve. Her efforts weren’t just about conservation but also about improving the livelihoods of locals, providing jobs, and creating a sustainable ecosystem.

Opening Song Saa
After nearly a decade of restoration, Song Saa Private Island opened in 2012. More than a luxury retreat, it became a model for sustainable tourism, blending barefoot luxury with ecological responsibility.

What Makes Song Saa Special?

  1. A Unique Concept of Luxury
Song Saa redefines high-end tourism with its focus on sustainability. It eschews ostentation for meaningful, immersive experiences. Each villa is crafted from sustainable materials, offering stunning views and unparalleled comfort while minimizing environmental impact.
  2. Regenerative Tourism
The resort operates on regenerative principles, integrating conservation and community development into its operations. Guests participate in activities like guided underwater meditation and bioluminescent plankton swims, becoming part of a living ecosystem.
  3. The Song Saa Foundation
Founded in 2013, the Song Saa Foundation supports medical missions, educational programs, and marine conservation. Its work extends beyond the island, impacting nearby communities and preserving Cambodia’s natural heritage.
  4. Cultural and Ecological Stewardship
The name “Song Saa” means “sweetheart” in Khmer, reflecting a commitment to cultural appreciation and ecological harmony. Signature experiences like monk blessing ceremonies and village visits foster connections between guests and the local culture.

How Long Should You Stay?

To truly immerse yourself in the Song Saa experience, a three- to five-day stay is ideal. This gives you ample time to relax, explore, and engage with the island’s unique offerings.

  • Three Days: Perfect for a quick escape. Focus on relaxation, beach activities, and signature experiences like the monk blessing ceremony.

For the Love of Khmer Food by Megan Murphy

For the Love of Khmer Food

Have you ever sampled food that simultaneously makes you feel at home, yet leaves you longing for a destination you have yet to see? For myself and countless others, this is what Khmer (also known as Cambodian) food lets us experience. In my hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts there is a Southeast Asian diaspora so widespread that the city is home to the second largest Cambodian population in the United States.

Fortunately, Southeast Asian immigrants to the U.S. have brought their rich culture, which includes a plethora of marvelous foods.Food is a love language for Khmer people, as you will learn if you are ever blessed with the opportunity to know a Cambodian family. Being an amateur home cook, I have learned much about preparing Cambodian food along with some history of the country. One of my earliest memories of trying it was as a teenager at an area many refer to as Pailin Park in Lowell. There during the warmer months you will find locals playing volleyball and other games, in addition to a vendor grilling sach ko ang, also known as lemongrass beef skewers, along with pounding up some bok lahong (green papaya salad.) Once I tried the skewers, I was completely infatuated.

I asked friends, what is it that makes the distinct flavor? The answer was kroeung. It is a quintessential Cambodian seasoning commonly made from lemongrass, makrut limes leaves, garlic, shallots, turmeric, and galangal all meticulously pounded into a curry paste. The flavor will awaken your senses and transport you to a tropical place. Once I learned this, I began making my own kroeung, along with other foods from the country. I wish to visit Cambodia someday as I’ve continued to learn more about this beautiful place. For now, I will continue to support local Cambodian restaurants and make some of my favorites at home.

Phnom Penh Steps Onto the Global Travel Stage

Phnom Penh has reached a defining moment in its tourism journey after being named by BBC Travel as one of the world’s 20 must visit destinations for 2026, a recognition that signals the Cambodian capital’s growing international appeal. The listing places Phnom Penh among destinations that prioritize meaningful travel experiences rooted in culture, community and environmental responsibility, reinforcing the city’s evolution from a regional capital into a destination of global relevance.

Why Did BBC Travel Choose Phnom Penh as a Must Visit City?

A New Era of Creative and Sustainable Growth

According to BBC Travel, Phnom Penh is entering “a new era,” driven by creative and sustainable developments that are reshaping the urban landscape. For decades, the capital lived in the shadow of Siem Reap’s world famous Angkor temples, but this acknowledgment confirms that Phnom Penh is now confidently stepping into the global spotlight. The city’s renewed identity reflects a balance between heritage and modern progress, offering visitors an experience that feels both authentic and forward looking.

Techo International Airport Unlocks Global Connectivity

One of the most significant factors highlighted by BBC Travel is the launch of Techo International Airport, Cambodia’s largest infrastructure project to date. The airport is set to dramatically improve international accessibility, with new routes connecting Phnom Penh to major markets including the UAE, Turkey, China and Japan. This expanded connectivity positions the capital as a strategic gateway for tourism, business and investment, supporting Cambodia’s broader economic ambitions.

Urban Transformation and Vibrant Public Spaces

“On the ground, the city’s transformation is equally striking. Once home to just a single traffic light, Phnom Penh is now emerging as a model for sustainable urban tourism.” New public attractions are redefining how residents and visitors engage with the city, most notably the Chaktomuk Walk Street, a lively pedestrian riverfront that comes alive on weekends with Khmer street food, local crafts and live music. These developments enhance livability while strengthening cultural exchange and local enterprise.

Eco Conscious Initiatives Shaping the Visitor Experience

“Eco friendly initiatives, such as electric tuk tuks introduced by local hotels, further reflect the city’s forward looking vision.” These initiatives demonstrate how Phnom Penh is aligning tourism growth with environmental responsibility, offering travelers greener mobility options while supporting local innovation. Such efforts reinforce the city’s reputation as a destination that values sustainability alongside economic development.

Phnom Penh Among the World’s Most Inspiring Destinations

Phnom Penh joins an impressive list of destinations recognized by BBC Travel, including Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Costa Rica, the Komodo Islands and Oregon Coast, among others. This association places Cambodia’s capital firmly within a global narrative of destinations that offer depth, purpose and responsible tourism, further elevating its international profile.

Conclusion

Phnom Penh’s recognition by BBC Travel as a top destination for 2026 marks a turning point in the city’s global standing. Through major infrastructure investments, creative urban spaces and a strong commitment to sustainable tourism, the capital is redefining its identity and inviting the world to experience a new chapter in Cambodia’s story.

Marrying someone from a different culture can be an adventure filled with challenges and joys. Cambodian women, in particular, possess qualities that make them exceptional partners for those seeking meaningful relationships. Here, we explore 12 compelling reasons why marrying a Cambodian woman might be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

1. Warm and Supportive Nature

Cambodian women are known for their warm, nurturing, and supportive demeanor. Raised in a culture that emphasizes family values, they are often deeply committed to ensuring the happiness and well-being of their loved ones. As a wife, a Cambodian woman will likely be your cheerleader, caregiver, and best friend all rolled into one.

Her genuine care extends beyond immediate family, often enveloping her spouse’s family as her own. This generosity of spirit is part of what makes Cambodian women so unique and cherished as partners.

2. Strong Family-Oriented Values

In Cambodian culture, family is everything. Women are taught from a young age to prioritize family harmony and to value their roles as daughters, sisters, and future wives and mothers. Marrying a Cambodian woman means joining a culture that treasures strong familial bonds and enduring respect for elders.

You’ll find that she not only values the family you’ll build together but also ensures it thrives with love and mutual respect.

3. Their Unique and Exotic Beauty

Cambodian women are often admired for their natural beauty. With radiant skin, delicate features, and an effortless charm, they embody a unique exotic allure. Their beauty goes beyond physical appearance, as their kind eyes and sincere smiles reveal the warmth within.

Moreover, Cambodian women take pride in maintaining their appearance and presenting themselves well, whether it’s through traditional attire like the sampot or modern clothing.

4. Culinary Talent

Cambodian women often grow up learning how to cook traditional dishes that reflect the country’s rich culinary heritage. Imagine coming home to authentic amok trey (fish curry), lok lak (beef stir-fry), or freshly made nom banh chok (Khmer noodles).

A Cambodian wife brings not only love to the table but also a mastery of flavors that will make every meal an event to look forward to.

5. Resilience and Hard Work

Cambodian women are incredibly resilient and hardworking. Many have grown up in challenging circumstances, which has instilled in them a strong sense of determination and resourcefulness. They understand the value of perseverance and have an inspiring ability to face adversity with grace.

As a partner, this resilience translates into unwavering support for her spouse and family, no matter the hurdles life presents.

6. Low Drama and High Adaptability

Unlike some cultural stereotypes about relationships, Cambodian women are generally straightforward and low-maintenance in their relationships. Their upbringing teaches them the importance of compromise, adaptability, and avoiding unnecessary drama.

This makes them ideal partners for someone looking for a peaceful and balanced marriage. They focus on building harmony and solving issues constructively rather than creating conflicts.

7. Fluency in Two Worlds

Many Cambodian women are increasingly educated and familiar with both traditional and modern values. While they honor and respect their heritage, they are open to new ideas and experiences, making them adaptable to life in any part of the world.

This cultural fluency enables Cambodian women to navigate cross-cultural relationships with ease, understanding, and enthusiasm.

8. Their Humble and Down-to-Earth Personality

Cambodian women often carry a humble and down-to-earth attitude that endears them to everyone they meet. They are not materialistic and are content with simple pleasures, valuing experiences and relationships over material wealth.

This grounded outlook ensures a partnership built on shared values rather than superficial expectations.

9. Deep Respect for Marriage

In Cambodia, marriage is considered a sacred union. Cambodian women often view their roles as wives as lifelong commitments and approach marriage with the seriousness and dedication it deserves.

This respect for the institution of marriage means you’ll likely have a partner who values fidelity, mutual respect, and effort to make the relationship work through thick and thin.

10. A Life Rich in Tradition and Culture

When you marry a Cambodian woman, you marry into a culture steeped in tradition. From vibrant festivals like Pchum Ben (Ancestor’s Day) to the beautiful rituals of a traditional Khmer wedding, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Cambodian heritage.

Your life together will be enriched by these cultural experiences, giving your marriage a unique and colorful dimension.

11. Natural Caregiving Abilities

Cambodian women are often natural caregivers. Whether it’s taking care of children, supporting an aging parent, or ensuring her partner’s needs are met, she takes on these roles with grace and dedication.

Marrying a Cambodian woman means having a partner who will stand by you and provide unparalleled care when life gets tough.

12. A Chance to Live an Enriching Lifestyle

Marriage to a Cambodian woman could open doors to living in Cambodia—a land of stunning landscapes, rich history, and friendly communities. Whether you choose to stay in the bustling capital of Phnom Penh, the serene countryside, or by the coast, you’ll find yourself embracing a lifestyle that values simplicity and community.

Even if you don’t live in Cambodia, the connection to the country will undoubtedly enrich your life through visits, family ties, and cultural experiences.

Conclusion

Choosing a life partner is one of the most significant decisions you’ll ever make. Marrying a Cambodian woman offers the promise of a loving, supportive, and enduring partnership grounded in cultural values and mutual respect.

Of course, every relationship depends on shared understanding, respect, and effort from both sides. If you’re open to embracing the rich traditions of Cambodia and building a life together, marrying a Cambodian woman could be the perfect choice for a fulfilling and joyful marriage.
