Could Easing Angkor’s 1-Day Ticket Requirements Boost Tourism?

In an effort to revitalize Cambodia’s tourism industry, the Angkor Institute has announced a significant change in the entry requirements for Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most iconic historical sites. Starting at the end of September 2024, the process for purchasing one-day tickets will be simplified: visitors will no longer need to provide detailed personal information, such as photos, nationality, age, and gender. This decision, made by the Board of Directors of Angkor under the chairmanship of Mr. Aun Porn Moniroth, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, aims to make the experience more convenient for tourists and encourage more visitors to explore the ancient temples.

Could Simplified Angkor Tickets Make Your Trip Easier?
Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), presided over the ‘4th Meeting of the Directors Board of the Angkor Enterprise’ in the presence of Sok Soken, Minister of Tourism (MoT), held in Phnom Penh on August, 27. MEF

What Changes Are Being Implemented?

Here are the key updates on the new ticketing system:

  1. Simplified Entry for One-Day Tickets: For tourists purchasing one-day tickets, the need to provide personal information such as photos, nationality, age group, and gender will be removed starting at the end of September 2024. This change is expected to streamline the entry process and reduce waiting times.
  2. Unchanged Requirements for Longer Stays: For those opting for 3-day or 7-day tickets, the requirement to provide a photograph will remain in place until the end of 2024. This measure ensures that security and monitoring are maintained for tourists planning to spend more time exploring the Angkor complex.
  3. Revised Checkpoint System: In an additional move to enhance visitor experience, the number of checkpoints will be reduced. The sophisticated control system will maintain checkpoints only at the temple entrances, eliminating the four existing entry checkpoints. This adjustment is aimed at reducing congestion and making the entry process smoother for tourists.
  4. Technological Advancements for Ticket Sales: The Angkor Institute will also develop a more advanced IT system to facilitate ticket sales. This includes the introduction of self-service machines and a mobile app, which will offer tourists the convenience of electronic payment methods.
  5. New Ticket Formats: To further improve the ease of access, the Institute is exploring the introduction of hand-worn ticket forms, which would streamline the check-in process for visitors.
  6. Future Reforms: A joint working group will be established to review and implement further reforms in the ticketing system. Starting January 1, 2025, there are plans to introduce group temple tickets as a second phase of the reform, potentially offering more flexible options for visitors.

Advantages of the New Strategy

These changes are poised to bring several advantages:

  • Enhanced Convenience: By eliminating the need for personal information for one-day tickets, the Angkor Institute reduces administrative hurdles, making it easier for spontaneous travelers to visit. This can significantly cut down on wait times, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
  • Increased Tourist Numbers: With a simpler entry process, Angkor Wat could attract a larger number of tourists, particularly those who are deterred by lengthy or cumbersome administrative requirements.
  • Boosted Local Economy: More tourists mean more revenue for local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to guides and transportation services, further boosting the Cambodian economy.
  • Embracing Technology: By integrating modern technology, such as self-service machines and a mobile app, the Angkor Institute is modernizing the ticketing process, aligning with global tourism trends toward digitalization and contactless payments.
  • Improved Security and Control: Despite easing some entry requirements, the strategic placement of checkpoints and maintenance of certain controls for longer-stay tickets ensure that the integrity and security of the Angkor complex are upheld.

What Do You Think?

These changes reflect a broader strategy to make Angkor Wat more accessible while maintaining its security and cultural significance. By simplifying the entry process and embracing modern technology, the Angkor Institute aims to attract a larger number of tourists, thereby supporting Cambodia’s tourism sector and economy.

Renewing an expired driving license in Cambodia is a straightforward process that requires only a few essential documents and a quick visit to the service center. Many drivers may find themselves wondering if it’s possible to renew a license that’s already expired, what paperwork they’ll need to gather, and how much they should expect to pay for the service. Understanding the process, requirements, and associated costs can save time, avoid penalties, and ensure that drivers stay compliant with Cambodian traffic laws.

In Cambodia, renewing an expired license is permitted, but there are specific guidelines to follow. Drivers will need to bring their current driver’s license, a certified copy of their Cambodian identity card, a physical fitness certificate, and several passport-sized photos to the renewal appointment. This documentation helps verify identity, ensure fitness to drive, and expedite the renewal process.

The fees for renewing a driving license are determined by license type, with different costs applied based on the classification, from type “A” to types “B,” “C,” “D,” and “E.” It’s important for drivers to renew promptly, as licenses that have been expired for 30 days or more incur a daily penalty fee. This late fee adds up quickly, so addressing an expired license sooner rather than later is financially beneficial.

Whether you are renewing a motorcycle, car, or commercial license, understanding the renewal requirements and fees will keep you on the road legally. For those who may need additional guidance or support during the process, contacting the provided hotline can help clarify any questions or concerns. Read on for a complete overview of required documents, fee structures, and important tips to make your license renewal process hassle-free.

  • The original driver’s license to be renewed
  • A copy of your Cambodian identity card (certified by the competent authority)
  • A physical fitness certificate (available at the service location)
  • Three white photos (4×6 size)

Service Fees:

  • Type “A” license: 20,000 riel
  • Type “B,” “C,” “D,” or “E” license: 30,000 riel

Late Renewal Penalty: If your driver’s license has been expired for 30 days or more, a penalty of 500 riel per day will be applied.

While there is calm in Phnom Penh and across Cambodia, political rallies and disputes are still possible often at short or no notice and have the potential to trigger violence. You should monitor local media closely and avoid all protests and demonstrations, as they could turn violent.

Is Phnom Penh safe for tourism?

Is Phnom Penh safe for tourism?

Although most visits are trouble-free, crime can still occur. Most incidents are bag snatchings, often by thieves riding past on motorbikes. Bag straps have been cut and bags/phones snatched from those on foot and passengers in tuk-tuks and motorbikes, often causing injury. Hotspots for petty crime include the riverfront and BKK areas of Phnom Penh, and the beaches and tourist areas of Sihanoukville and nearby islands.

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your belongings:

  • Use a hotel safe for your valuables
  • Minimise the items you carry with you; if you carry a bag, make sure the strap is over your shoulder, away from the road to deter thieves on motorbikes from snatching it
  • Take extra care at night and in isolated areas
  • Be particularly vigilant travelling at night by bicycle or motorcycle, especially if you’re alone. Stick to well-used, well-lit roads and carry a personal alarm if possible
  • Avoid placing bags in the front basket of bicycles
  • Be wary of pickpockets, especially on public transport and in crowded areas
  • If you travel by bus, make sure cash and valuables you have are secured – there have been incidents where passengers have had items taken from bags while asleep
  • Tuk-tuks with metal grills on the back and side can offer some protection against bag snatching

CTB and Trip.com Agree to Pause Advertising Collaboration

The Cambodia Tourism Board and Trip.com have mutually decided to suspend their planned tourism advertising activities across Trip.com Group affiliated platforms until a more appropriate time, according to an official statement released by CTB on Friday. The cooperation was narrowly defined and focused exclusively on tourism promotion, scheduled to run from September 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. This initiative formed part of Cambodia contribution to the Cambodia China Tourism Year, a joint designation announced by leaders of both countries on April 17, 2025. Authorities have stressed that this pause should be understood as a timing adjustment rather than a policy shift, with Cambodia continuing to be prominently featured on Trip.com platforms where Chinese travelers actively explore Cambodian destinations.

Promotional Scope and Data Protection Assurance

CTB underscored that the agreement with Trip.com was strictly promotional and carried no involvement in personal data handling. The board provided a clear assurance in its statement, saying, “CTB confirms that, under this agreement or any other form of cooperation, it has not requested, received, accessed, stored, processed, or shared any personal data relating to tourists.” This clarification reinforces CTB commitment to responsible and transparent tourism promotion while safeguarding traveler privacy. The board reiterated its broader mission to present Cambodia as a safe, secure, and welcoming destination for international visitors.

Industry Perspective on a Routine Business Adjustment

Tourism industry insiders have played down concerns surrounding the suspension, framing it as a normal business practice rather than a signal of weakened ties with the Chinese market. A stakeholder who requested anonymity explained, “Advertising deals are frequently reviewed and changes are made,” adding, “It’s a separate affair, and tourism, mainly from China, will continue to come to the Kingdom using Trip.com platforms.” This perspective highlights that digital travel platforms remain a key channel for Chinese tourists planning trips to Cambodia, regardless of short term promotional adjustments.

Chinese Tourism as a Pillar of Economic Recovery

Chinese visitors continue to be central to Cambodia tourism recovery and long term growth strategy, particularly in the post Covid 19 landscape. Their return has been widely viewed as essential for reviving economic activity, sustaining jobs, and generating income across hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, and local service providers. In 2025, China ranked as Cambodia second largest source of international visitors after Vietnam. During the first eleven months of the year, more than 1.1 million Chinese tourists arrived in the Kingdom, reflecting a 43.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024 and accounting for roughly 21 percent of total international arrivals.

Momentum Toward Pre Pandemic Levels and Future Targets

The latest figures indicate a steady recovery toward pre pandemic tourism levels. In 2019, China was Cambodia largest source market, contributing around 2.3 million visitors or nearly one third of all international arrivals. To build on renewed momentum, Cambodia has designated 2025 as the Cambodia China Tourism Year, setting an ambitious goal of attracting more than two million Chinese tourists. The Royal Government has introduced supportive measures including improved hospitality services, targeted marketing initiatives, and visitor friendly policies such as permitting the use of the Chinese renminbi in tourism related businesses.

Conclusion

Despite the temporary suspension of the advertising campaign with Trip.com, confidence remains strong among officials and industry stakeholders that Cambodia appeal to Chinese travelers will continue to grow. The pause reflects a strategic recalibration rather than a retreat, with solid fundamentals underpinning tourism demand from China. Supported by government initiatives, private sector readiness, and sustained interest from Chinese travelers, Cambodia tourism sector is well positioned to strengthen its recovery and advance toward its long term growth objectives.

Angkor Park Issues Rainy Season Safety Advice: What Should Tourists Know Before Visiting Angkor in the Rain?

In Siem Reap, Cambodia, the Apsara National Authority has introduced a series of safety guidelines for visitors heading to the famous Angkor Archaeological Park during the rainy season. The new recommendations are designed to protect tourists, preserve the ancient temple structures, and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at one of the world’s most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As heavy rains and strong winds begin arriving earlier this year, authorities are urging travel agencies, tour guides, and visitors to stay alert while exploring the historic park.

Angkor Park rainy season safety tips

The advisory comes as Cambodia prepares for a wetter season marked by frequent thunderstorms and unpredictable weather conditions. According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, the rainy season is expected to start earlier compared to 2025, increasing the likelihood of storms, lightning, and strong winds across the country. More information about Angkor Park can be found through the official Apsara National Authority.

Safety guidelines for rainy season at Angkor Park

Safety Concerns During Heavy Rain and Storms

Apsara officials warned that heavy rain and strong winds can create dangerous conditions around the ancient temples and forested areas inside Angkor Park. Large tree branches may break unexpectedly, while older trees could collapse during severe storms. Visitors are strongly advised not to park vehicles or seek shelter under large trees during bad weather.

Authorities also reminded tourists to avoid using electronic devices outdoors during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes. Tourism officials and security personnel stationed around the park will continue monitoring weather conditions and guiding visitors to safer areas when necessary.

Proper Footwear and Respectful Behavior Encouraged

Due to the wet conditions, the stone pathways and temple surfaces inside Angkor Park can become extremely slippery. Visitors are encouraged to wear shoes with strong grip to reduce the risk of falls and injuries while exploring the historic structures.

Tourists are also advised to carry raincoats or umbrellas without sharp edges to help protect the delicate stone carvings and sculptures from accidental damage. Authorities stressed that preserving the cultural heritage of Angkor remains a shared responsibility for both local operators and international visitors.

In addition, respectful dress remains an important requirement, especially in sacred areas of the temples. Visitors should avoid wearing revealing clothing and are reminded that climbing on stone structures, touching sculptures, moving stones, or drawing on temple walls is strictly prohibited.

Wildlife and Environmental Protection Measures

As rainfall increases across the forested temple complex, insect activity is expected to rise significantly. Apsara is encouraging visitors to use insect repellent while touring the area to avoid discomfort and possible insect bites.

Officials also issued a strong warning regarding monkeys living around the temple grounds. Visitors are told not to feed or touch the animals because human interaction can change their natural behavior, create dependency, and increase health and safety risks for both tourists and wildlife.

The consumption of alcohol is also prohibited throughout the heritage site to maintain safety, order, and respect for the spiritual significance of the ancient temples.

Tourism Authorities Focus on Visitor Experience

The latest safety measures reflect ongoing efforts by Cambodian tourism authorities to balance visitor safety with cultural preservation. Angkor Archaeological Park remains one of Cambodia’s most important tourism destinations, attracting millions of international travelers every year.

By following the rainy season guidelines and respecting the historical environment, visitors can continue enjoying the beauty of Angkor while helping preserve the ancient site for future generations. Organizers and tourism officials hope the awareness campaign will reduce accidents during the wet season and improve the overall visitor experience.

Conclusion

As Cambodia enters another rainy season, safety and preservation have become key priorities at Angkor Archaeological Park. From slippery temple stones to storm related hazards, visitors are being encouraged to take extra precautions while exploring the iconic heritage site. With proper preparation and responsible behavior, tourists can safely experience the rich history and breathtaking beauty of Angkor even during challenging weather conditions.
