Nokor Sankranta, held from April 13 to 19 in Phnom Penh, drew nearly 9 million visitors during and after the Khmer New Year celebrations. According to spokesperson Dor Samphors, the capital alone welcomed more than 4 million people between April 14 and 16, with major venues such as the former Phnom Penh International Airport playing a key role in attracting large crowds and creating a vibrant, festive atmosphere.

The momentum continued after the main holiday period, with 1.3 million participants on April 17 and more than 1.5 million on April 18. The final day of celebrations brought in over 1.4 million visitors, including 23,232 international tourists, reinforcing the event’s strong appeal to both local and global audiences.

Authorities ensured the event ran smoothly with strong safety and public health measures in place. Medical teams treated 2,379 minor cases through ambulances and mobile units, while officials confirmed there were no major incidents, highlighting effective planning, security, and event management throughout the weeklong celebration.

Nokor Sankranta Brings the City to Life

The highlight of the celebrations was the Nokor Sankranta event, which extended across six major venues and all 14 districts of Phnom Penh. The event created a lively and welcoming environment filled with traditional games, cultural performances, and community activities. Organized by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia in partnership with the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, Nokor Sankranta played a central role in attracting massive crowds and delivering a memorable holiday experience for both locals and visitors.

Strong Security Ensures Safe Celebrations

A key factor behind the success of the event was the strong focus on safety and public order. Authorities maintained strict security measures throughout the holiday period to ensure smooth and peaceful celebrations. Municipal Spokesperson Ms. Dor Samphors emphasized the positive outcome, stating, “excellent security and public order,” and describing the atmosphere as taking place under a “canopy of peace” with no major incidents reported. Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Chuon Narin also confirmed that police remained on high alert, allowing all activities and gatherings to proceed without disruption.

Festivities Continue Beyond the Holiday

Even though the official three day Khmer New Year celebrations have ended, the festive spirit continues in Phnom Penh. The Nokor Sankranta event will run until April 19, giving more opportunities for people to enjoy the vibrant cultural activities and celebrations that have defined this record breaking occasion.

Conclusion

The arrival of 4.3 million visitors in just three days highlights Phnom Penh’s growing strength as a major tourism and cultural destination. With strong organization, engaging events, and effective security, the capital has set a new standard for national celebrations. This success not only boosts the tourism sector but also reinforces Cambodia’s image as a dynamic and welcoming destination for travelers from around the world. AKP
