Cambodia needs a lot of vegetables to supply the local people, we see that by 2020, Cambodia can produce more than 700,000 tons of vegetables, while the actual demand is 1 million tons per year. That is why Cambodia needs to import more than 300,000 tons of vegetables from neighboring countries to supply its people.

Vegetables are in high demand in Cambodia

According to an official post by HE Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries: The government encourages and encourages people to focus on growing local vegetables to supply markets, increase household incomes, create jobs and seize opportunities as the world faces a global crisis. In response to this need, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, under the General Department of Agriculture, has received timely support from the Royal Government through the Ministry of Economy and Finance and development partners, especially the International Fund for Agricultural Development has been supporting and encouraging the private sector, along with development partners such as ASPIRE, CASDP, LEAP, and CHAIN, to implement safe vegetable production projects with farmers and partners across the country, and through this excellent collaboration The Ministry strongly hopes and believes that in the near future, Cambodia will have enough safe vegetables to supply the local market and export. In addition, the Ministry has also carefully studied the possibility of expanding the production of some important vegetables such as cabbage, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and garlic, etc. In Mondulkiri province, which has the geographical characteristics and potential to produce these important vegetables to contribute to meet demand.

He added that in order to improve the quality of production, economic efficiency, provide justice and trust to consumers, the General Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the Capital-Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to train on good agricultural principles on vegetable crops (GAP). Organic technical principles, modern vegetable cultivation techniques according to GAP principles and organic, general characteristics of plant management, management of agricultural inputs, prevention of contamination and biological control methods, harvesting techniques and post-harvest techniques and procedures to Obtained the Certificate of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Organic (CAM-ORGANIC).

Meanwhile, according to the report of the General Department of Agriculture (11/01/2012), in 2019, the total production area of ​​57,208 hectares of vegetable crops nationwide can be harvested a total of 681,099 tons. According to estimates, the demand for vegetables in 2020 will be 1,045,725 tons, and in fact, domestic vegetable production will be able to supply only 716,113 tons, equivalent to 68%, of which 69% in the dry season and 75% in the dry season. In addition, Cambodia needs to import a total of 329,612 tons of vegetables, most of which Cambodia can not produce.
