Cambodia Eyes Its Own Satellites Within Five Years: Why Is Cambodia Planning to Launch Satellites?

Cambodia is beginning to look beyond simply using satellite services from international companies and is now considering the possibility of launching its own satellites within the next five years. The announcement reflects the country’s growing ambition to strengthen its digital infrastructure and develop local expertise in satellite and space technology to support national development.

Cambodia Expands Its Vision for Space Technology

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a workshop on “Techniques for monitoring and collecting data through satellites and satellite technology” on April 23, 2026, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications His Excellency Chea Vandet said Cambodia is actively exploring how satellite technology can support important sectors such as agriculture, environmental management, land administration, and urban planning.

While Cambodia is currently studying the use of satellite services from international providers, the minister stressed that the country should also think long term by considering the launch of its own satellites within the next five years. The move would mark a major step forward in Cambodia’s digital and technological development strategy.

Government Prioritizes Satellite Skills and Human Resources

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has been placing strong focus on developing human resources in satellite and space related fields. According to the minister, expert officers have already been sent on study visits to satellite technology companies and training institutions abroad to strengthen their technical knowledge and practical experience.

The ministry is also encouraging more advanced education opportunities in the sector. In the future, Cambodia may introduce scholarships for students studying telecommunications and satellite related subjects at the Academy of Digital Technology and partner universities. This initiative is expected to help build a new generation of Cambodian specialists capable of supporting the country’s long term ambitions in space technology.

Cambodia Studies National Space Management Unit

Alongside discussions about launching satellites, the ministry is also studying the feasibility of establishing a national space management unit. The proposed body would coordinate and manage Cambodia’s space related activities while supporting cooperation between ministries, institutions, researchers, and international partners.

The plan highlights Cambodia’s increasing interest in becoming more involved in the global space and satellite sector. Officials believe satellite technology can provide valuable data and services that improve decision making across many industries and public services.

Workshop Highlights Modern Satellite Applications

The workshop brought together civil servants, ministry officials, professors, students, and experts to exchange knowledge on modern satellite systems and space technology. Experts from Pixxel Space Technologies Inc. shared insights on the current status of Cambodia’s space sector, Earth Observation systems, Remote Sensing Satellite technologies, and hyperspectral satellite image analysis.

Participants also learned how satellite data can be used for monitoring natural resources, environmental changes, land use, and urban development. The discussions demonstrated the growing importance of satellite technology in addressing real world challenges and supporting sustainable development.

Conclusion

Cambodia’s interest in launching its own satellites signals a bold shift toward advanced technology and digital innovation. Although the plan is still under consideration, the government’s investment in human resources, education, and space related institutions shows that the country is preparing for a more active role in the satellite and space industry. If successful, Cambodia’s future satellite ambitions could strengthen national development, improve data driven planning, and open new opportunities in science and technology.
