Why Cambodian students attend two universities or colleges at the same time?

In Cambodia, an education system has been in place since at least from the thirteenth century on formal educational structure. This means 12 years for the completion of general education that divides up into six years for primary education (grade 1 to 6) and secondary education consists of three years each for lower secondary education (grade 7 to 9) and upper secondary education (grade 10 to 12). This formulation does not include at least one year for pre-school education (kindergarten) for children from 3 to below 6 years old and university education of 4 to 5 years.

The number of students who are taking two universities or colleges at the same time is increasing, even more than before. The main reason for this is that in today’s era people want to have as much knowledge as possible and they don’t want to miss anything out.

Students can study two different universities at the same time. Many students want to go back to school but do not have enough time. They are forced to choose between one or the other. This can result in a lack of focus on their studies and having difficulty achieving academic success.

There are two reasons Why Cambodian students attend two universities or colleges at the same time:

    1. Job Market Demand: Cambodia is a developing country; therefore, job market is very competitive. Students think that studying two universities or colleges would help them to land at least a job easier than those who study only one major at a university.

    2. Personal Interest: Some Cambodian students have deep interest on the major that they want to pursue such as English language study and Computer Science. Therefore, they decide to pursue two majors in two different universities.
