Which Countries Love Visiting Cambodia the Most in 2024 and Why?

Cambodia, known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landmarks, continues to thrive as a global tourist destination. The nation’s tourism industry witnessed a significant rebound in 2024, with six million international visitors arriving in the first 11 months alone, marking a remarkable 22% growth compared to the same period in 2023.

This resurgence highlights Cambodia’s allure, but which countries contribute most to its growing international tourism? Let’s delve into the data, expert insights, and the reasons behind the trends.

Top Countries Visiting Cambodia: A 2024 Breakdown

Data from the Ministry of Tourism reveals that tourists from Thailand and Vietnam dominate Cambodia’s international visitor landscape, accounting for over half of all arrivals. Here’s the detailed breakdown:

  • Thailand: 1.91 million tourists, representing 31.9% of total arrivals (a 15.4% increase year-over-year).
  • Vietnam: 1.2 million tourists, constituting 20.1% of the market share (a 30.8% increase).
  • China: 769,775 tourists, holding 12.8% of the share.
  • Laos: 306,948 visitors, contributing 5.1% of arrivals.
  • United States: 190,856 tourists, representing 3.3%.

Additional key markets included South Korea, Indonesia, France, the UK, and Japan. These countries collectively showcase Cambodia’s broad appeal across continents.

Factors Driving Tourist Numbers from Thailand and Vietnam

Geographical Proximity and Shared Borders

The geographical closeness of Thailand and Vietnam to Cambodia plays a pivotal role in attracting tourists. Khiev Thy, President of the Khmer Angkor Tour Guide Association (KATGA), emphasized that many Thai and Vietnamese visitors primarily travel for business activities, particularly in the border provinces.

“Most Thai and Vietnamese visitors are here for business-related purposes rather than leisure. They rarely explore Cambodia’s cultural and historical treasures, like the Angkor temples,” Thy explained.

Eased Travel and Increased Cross-Border Activity

Improved cross-border connectivity and streamlined visa policies further enhance tourist flows from these neighboring countries. The inclusion of all international entries—including those visiting for gambling and other border activities—in tourism statistics has also bolstered the recorded numbers.

The Growing Role of Chinese Tourists

Although Chinese tourists ranked third in 2024, their numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels. However, there has been a noticeable uptick in Chinese visitors to Siem Reap, a key cultural hub known for the iconic Angkor Archaeological Park.

“We’ve seen more Chinese tourists recently, but their numbers have not yet returned to where they were before 2020,” Thy observed. He underscored the importance of attracting international tourists to historical sites, stating, “The tourism sector is a crucial source of income for Siem Reap province.”

This renewed interest among Chinese tourists is a promising sign for the sector, especially given China’s economic influence and the cultural connections between the two nations.

European and American Markets: Focus on Historical Tourism

European and American tourists contribute significantly to Cambodia’s cultural tourism. Unlike their Thai and Vietnamese counterparts, these visitors primarily seek out historical landmarks, such as the Angkor temples, Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace, and Battambang’s colonial architecture.

The Ministry of Tourism noted that nearly 900,000 international tourists purchased tickets to visit the Angkor Archaeological Park from January to November 2024, generating over $41.91 million in revenue—a 28% increase compared to 2023. This data underscores the global appeal of Cambodia’s historical heritage.

Insights from Tourism Experts

Changing Data Collection Methods

Thourn Sinan, President of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia chapter, highlighted how revised data collection practices have impacted tourism statistics. “Previously, only leisure travelers were counted. Now, all international entries are included, such as those crossing for gambling or other activities,” Sinan explained.

Despite the methodological shift, Sinan welcomed the increase in international tourist numbers. He believes it reflects the growing recognition of Cambodia as a multifaceted destination for both leisure and business.

Challenges in Diversifying Tourism

Both Thy and Sinan agree that Cambodia’s tourism sector has immense potential but faces challenges in attracting a more diverse range of visitors. Thy noted the need to promote cultural and historical tourism more effectively to entice tourists from all demographics to explore beyond business-oriented border visits.

Why Cambodia Appeals to Global Tourists

Rich Cultural and Historical Offerings

From the world-renowned Angkor Wat to hidden gems like Koh Ker and Preah Vihear, Cambodia is a treasure trove of cultural and historical landmarks. These sites remain a magnet for long-haul travelers from Europe, the US, and China.

Unique Experiences

Cambodia offers distinctive experiences, such as:

  • River cruises on the Mekong.
  • Ecotourism in the Cardamom Mountains.
  • Traditional Khmer culinary journeys.

These attractions cater to diverse interests, making Cambodia an increasingly versatile destination.

Value for Money

Compared to other Southeast Asian destinations, Cambodia provides an affordable yet enriching travel experience, which resonates with budget-conscious tourists from both neighboring and distant countries.

Opportunities for Growth in Tourism

Infrastructure Development

Ongoing projects, such as the Techo International Airport and improved road networks, are expected to bolster accessibility and attract more international tourists in the coming years.

Focus on Emerging Markets

Cambodia could target emerging markets like India, Australia, and the Middle East to further diversify its tourist base. Enhanced marketing efforts and strategic partnerships with these regions could yield substantial benefits.

Leveraging Technology

Digital platforms, such as virtual tours of historical sites and enhanced online booking systems, can be utilized to attract tech-savvy travelers and promote Cambodia’s unique offerings globally.

A Bright Future for Cambodian Tourism

The growth in international tourist arrivals in 2024 signals Cambodia’s resilience and enduring appeal as a global destination. While Thailand and Vietnam dominate visitor numbers due to proximity and business activities, the country’s rich history, cultural heritage, and affordability continue to attract long-haul travelers from around the world.

To sustain and enhance this momentum, Cambodia must diversify its tourist markets, invest in infrastructure, and promote its cultural assets more aggressively. As the industry evolves, the potential for Cambodia to solidify its position as a premier travel destination remains immense.
