The project to build a new 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant with an investment of about $ 1 billion in Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong province, has been fully approved and supported by the Royal Government of Cambodia, but requires detailed study and resolutions whether the direct and indirect impact on people, society, and the environment.
According to the Council for the Development of Cambodia on the afternoon of December 8, 2020, in response to the investment proposal for the construction of a 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant of BOTUM SAKOR ENERGY COMPANY LIMITED, the Investment Committee of Cambodia of the Council for the Development of Cambodia decided to issue a final registration certificate to the above company, which is located in Thmor Sor village and Chamlong Kor village, Thmor Sor commune, Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong province, with an investment capital of approximately 1 billion USD and can create 360 jobs.

In Thmor Sor commune, Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong province, there are also plans to build a 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant under the investment of ROYAL Group with a total capital of more than $ 1 billion.
Minister of Mines and Energy, Suy Sem recently said that Cambodia has updated its energy plan for 2020 to 2030, in addition to private sector energy investment projects, the government also plans to use natural gas for the production of electricity in a large part with a total capacity of 3,600 megawatts, which can be implemented from 2027 until 2030.
“Cambodia’s economy is expected to recover in 2021 after a slowdown in the global epidemic of Kovid 19,” he said. “Therefore, Cambodia’s energy demand is expected to recover, in which natural gas will play an important role for Cambodia’s energy mix, especially in the transport, commercial and residential industries.”
